PSV Presentation

This document discusses the calculation of reaction forces due to pressure safety valve (PSV) discharge. It provides formulas from various standards to calculate the reaction force based on factors like set pressure, orifice area, mass flow rate, temperature, pressure, and dynamic loading. It also discusses how to determine the dynamic loading factor (DLF) which accounts for the dynamic nature of PSV discharge, and can amplify the steady-state reaction force based on the ratio of opening time to installation period (to/T ratio). The DLF ranges from 1 to 2 depending on this ratio, with higher DLF values at lower to/T ratios.

Determination of

Reaction forces
due to PSV discharge

1
PSV reaction force = 2 x P x A

where P = set pressure

A = selected orifice area

F = WV/gc + (P- Pa)A

F = Reaction force
W = mass flow rate
gc = gravitational constant
P = static pressure at the point of discharge
Pa = atmospheric pressure
V = exit velocity

Dynamic nature of the PSV Discharge
Reaction force

In a piping system acted upon by time varying loads,

the internal forces and moments are greater than those
produced under static application of the load

DLF =
Steady-state Reaction Force

According to ASME B31.1, Appendix II ,

for structures having essentially one degree-of-freedom
and a single load application, the DLF value will range
between 1 and 2 depending on the time history of the
applied load and the natural frequency.

W = weight of safety valve
h= distance from run pipe to centre line of outlet piping
E = Young’s modulus of inlet pipe at design temperature
I = Moment of inertia of inlet pipe
