THEMES
● Discrimination
○ Gender
○ Species (race)
○ Predator or prey (social standing)
● Prejudice
● Racial profiling
DISCRIMINATION

● Judy Hopps
○ Constantly being reminded that she’s just a small rabbit
■ “I’m not just some token bunny”
● Judy is being discriminated against in the workplace not only because of her
gender, but also because she is prey and a rabbit.
○ There are other women on the work force that we can see
■ (though it is predominately male)
■ All the other cops are either predators, or larger mammals
DISCRIMINATION
● Being a rabbit is a connection to being a woman in real life
○ Constantly being told that all you can be is cute
○ Size and strength constantly questioned
● Because she is a rabbit she is constantly talked over, patronized, and looked
at for just being a rabbit
○ Rabbit vs. bunny
DISCRIMINATION
● Nick Wilde
● Foxes are highly discriminated against
○ Seen as sly, cunning, manipulative
○ The con artists, the scammers, the pickpocket-ers, etc.
● Nick struggles to get certain jobs, join social groups, and even participate in
normal activities on a daily basis only because he’s a fox
● Fox and predator

PREJUDICE
● Judy Hopps comes into Zootopia with prejudice against foxes
○ She had a bad incident with a fox when she was younger
■ Unintentionally carried a bias against foxes
● She gets this from her parents
○ https://youtu.be/houGBKRsCBE?t=28
■ They are warning her and preparing her to be afraid of foxes
■ Constantly telling her to watch out for them and are reminding her about what happened
during her childhood
● Even after meeting Nick and realizing he isn’t a bad guy she continues to
carry the fox repellent on her belt
PREJUDICE
● Nick Wilde gets a lot of flak just because he’s a fox
○ People immediately don’t trust him because of who/what he is
● Has experienced it his whole life
○ Plays into it
● "Gondola" Clip - Disney's Zootopia
● Hopps and Wilde connect over these biases placed on them
○ Begin to understand the other better through their differences and experiences
RACIAL PROFILING
● As the movie progresses we see the cops begin to racially profile predators
who share similar biology to those who have gone savage
○ Racial profiling is the use of race or ethnicity as grounds for suspecting someone of having
committed an offense.
● Animals who once lived in harmony with each other turn on one another
○ People are being accused and harsh words are thrown around

➢ Predators are being targeted and feared, as well as losing their jobs and
being thrown into prison
RACIAL PROFILING
● Slate article “Disney’s Zootopia is a Delightful Kids’ Movie That is Also Totally
About Racial Profiling”, points out that Zootopia delivers the message that
“when a police force cracks down on a certain kind of person based only on
their own bias and fear—people get hurt and treated unfairly.”
● Assumptions are made based off of race, and it hurts everyone
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

● While it is a kids movie, it is important to be able to look at it and reflect it

back on yourself and society as a whole.
○ Prejudice, discrimination, and racial profiling are all very difficult topics to talk about
● Zootopia allows the audience to see issues that occur in real life through the
lens of a children’s movie. It is important to recognize these issues because
we could unintentionally be participating in stereotyping and unconscious
biases, and this can be very harmful to those around us.
UNCONSCIOUS BIAS

Unconscious bias: social stereotypes about certain groups of people that

individuals form outside their own conscious awareness.
● Grouping people together forms stereotypes
○ Harms everyone involved
● Unconscious therefore its important to recognize it
