Diode Applications: Engr. Jesson S. Anton

This document discusses diodes and their applications in rectifier circuits. It covers half-wave and full-wave rectification using both bridge networks and center-tapped transformers. Example circuits are provided to calculate output dc levels and peak inverse voltages. Clipper and clamper circuits are also discussed, explaining how diodes can clip portions of input signals or shift signal levels. The principles of analyzing circuits with both dc and ac sources are presented.

RECTIFICATION
RECTIFICATION
The process of converting AC to
pulsating DC

EXAMPLE:
Determine the dc level of the output for
the network using ideal and simplified
equivalent.

PEAK INVERSE VOLTAGE (PIV)

𝑃𝐼𝑉 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 ≅𝑉 𝑚
FULL-WAVE RECTIFIER

The dc level obtained from a sinusoidal

input can be improved 100% using a
process called full-wave rectification.
FULL-WAVE RECTIFIER

1. Bridge Network
2. Center-Tapped Transformer

network and calculate the output dc level
and the required PIV of each diode.
CLIPPERS
CLIPPERS

networks that employ diodes to “clip”

away a portion of an input signal
without distorting the remaining part of
the applied waveform.
CLIPPERS

Categories:
1. Series Clipper
2. Parallel Clipper
SERIES CLIPPERS
SERIES CLIPPER WITH DC
SUPPLY
PARALLEL CLIPPERS
CLIPPERS
Analysis:
1. Take careful note of where the output voltage is
defined.
2. Try to develop an overall sense of the response
by simply noting the “pressure” established by
each supply and the effect it will have on the
conventional current direction through the diode.
CLIPPERS
Analysis:
3. Determine the applied voltage (transition voltage)
that will result in a change of state for the diode
from the “off” to the “on” state.
4. It is often helpful to draw the output waveform
directly below the applied voltage using the same
scales for the horizontal axis and the vertical axis.
EXAMPLE:
Determine the output waveform for the
sinusoidal input of the figure.
SOLUTION:
EXAMPLE:
Determine vo for the network of the
figure.
CLAMPERS
CLAMPERS

a network constructed of a diode, a resistor,

and a capacitor that shifts a waveform to a
different dc level without changing the
appearance of the applied signal.
NETWORKS WITH A DC
AND AC SOURCE
NETWORKS WITH A DC
AND AC SOURCE

The response of any network with both an

ac and a dc source can be found by finding
the response to each source independently
and then combining the results.
