• Inverted Pyramid
• Hourglass
• Chronological order
INVERTED PYRAMID
Characteristics of Inverted Pyramid
• Most frequently used way of news writing
• Most important to least important
• Easy to remove lower part of copy as per the
space available
• Suitable for busy readers by giving essence of
story in first paragraph only
• Important to mention 5W1H in first paragraph
• Flexible to expand also, if required
• Pyramid style was used previously for news
writing
• Inverted pyramid helps newspapers in putting
many stories on front page
• Easy for reporters to write in a simple order
• Straightforward words should be used
• This style of newsw writing demands objectivity
and accuracy from the reporter / editor working
on a news copy
HOURGLASS STYLE
Characteristics of Hourglass style
• Combination of inverted pyramid and pyramid
• This style of news writing establishes the
essence in first two paras and then explains
the same in more details
• Generally used in writing sports and business
news
• At times, things get repeated in the
beginning , middle or end part of the story
• This format needs more space for the story
• Not suitable for front page where too many
stories compete to get space
• Whole story is written according to the interest of
readers in such stories
• Such stories are not easy to edit
• Such stories are beneficial for both kind of
readers-those who are in hurry and those who
have more time to read as well
• The art of this format lies in identifying only
those details that would interest the reader
• Such kind of writing takes long effort on the
part of reporter/editor
CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER
• Chronological order can be from past to present
in terms of years or in terms of changes in a
phenomenon
• For example- series of terroridt attack on a
specific place since last 10 or 15 years
• For example- time wise graphic display of a train
accident that crossed various locations and
stations at different times
• Such format consumes a lot of space
• Such format generally focuses on the history of
some phenomenon or event or practice or
achievement as well
• For example- stories on life history of some
personality , history of Tsunami occurrence in the
last 10 years etc.
• Such stories are not easy to edit
• This format is used as per requirement of any
news on any page
• Such format helps in clearing the context of
the story to the readers
• Such format adds archival value to news as
part of history or story behind a phenomenon
• It requires research and precision on the part
of both reporter and writer
• For example- feature on a popular monument
in delhi
