MTC8 0601 Q2 FPF

This document provides a lesson on relations. It defines a relation as a collection of ordered pairs where the first element is related to the second. Relations can be represented using ordered pairs, mapping diagrams, tables of values, graphs, or rules. Examples are provided to demonstrate representing relations in these different ways. The document aims to teach learners how to accurately represent and determine the elements of a relation.

Lesson 1

Relations
Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the learner should be able to

• accurately represent a relation using ordered pairs,

a mapping diagram, a table of values, a graph, and
a rule; and

• correctly determine the elements of a relation given

a rule.
Essential Questions

• What is a relation?

• How will you represent a relation using ordered pairs,

mapping diagram, table of values, graph, and rule?

• How will you determine the elements of a relation given a

rule?
Warm Up!

Before we learn about relations, let’s take a look back on sets by

● How do you define a set?

● How do you represent a set?

● In what ways can you describe a set?

Learn about It!

Relation
1 a collection of ordered pairs in which the first element is related to the second
element.

If is an element of the first set and is an element of the

second set, then the elements are said to be related if the
ordered pair is in the relation.

Relation
1 a collection of ordered pairs in which the first element is related to the second
element.

Example:
Let and , and let and be elements of and , respectively. If is
a relation where the first element is related to the second
element such that is twice , then .

Ways of Representing a Relation

2 A relation can be represented using ordered pairs, a mapping diagram, a table of
values, a graph or a rule.

Example:
Let and , and let and be elements of and , respectively. If is
a relation where the first element is equal to the second
element , we can represent in the following ways.

Marcelino wants to relate the provinces to their regions by

using ordered pairs where the first element is the province
while the second element is the region. The table below
