Lesson 1.2-Coterminal-Angles

This lesson discusses coterminal angles. It defines coterminal angles as two angles in standard position that have the same terminal side. The lesson illustrates angles in standard position and explains that if an angle θ is given, the measures of angles coterminal with θ are θ + nπ, where n is any integer. It provides examples of determining if angles are coterminal and gives a theorem stating the formula. Finally, it provides an exercise for students to find coterminal angles based on given measures.

Lesson Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the student will be
ble to :

 illustrate angles in standard position

determine angles coterminal to a given

angle
CLASSIFICATION OF ANGLES ACCORDING TO MEASURE

DEFINITION: Let be a positive angle whose vertex is with

sides and .
 Acute angle – is an angle whose measure is .
 Right angle – is an angle whose measure is .
 Obtuse angle – is an angle whose measure is .
 Straight angle – is an angle whose measure is .
ANGLES IN STANDARD POSITION
DEFINITION: An angle is in standard position if it is
drawn in the rectangular plane with its vertex at the
origin and its initial side on the positive axis.
COTERMINAL ANGLES
DEFINITION: Two angles in standard position are
said to be coterminal if they have the same
terminal side.
COTERMINAL ANGLES
EXAMPLES: Determine if the following angles in
standard position are coterminal:
 7
1.) and 3.) and rad rad
3 3

 11
2.) and 4.) and rad  rad

COTERMINAL ANGLES
THEOREM: If is an angle in standard position, then the
measures of the angles that are coterminal with are
given by

where is an integer. If the given angle is in radian

measure, then

where is an integer.
EXERCISE:
Answer the following:
1.) Find the angle coterminal with that has measure:
a. between and
b. between and
2.) What is the smallest positive angle coterminal with ?
3.) Find the largest negative angle coterminal with .
4.) Find the smallest positive angle coterminal with .
