MATH Lesson 14-16 Module 14-16 (Quarter 2)

This document provides instruction on converting decimals to fractions. It begins by introducing decimals and fractions as different ways to represent parts of a whole. Examples are given to show how to write decimals as fractions by determining the denominator based on factors of 10 and 100. Students are then asked to complete exercises converting decimals to fractions. The key skills taught are determining the denominator of a fraction equivalent to a decimal and applying this process to real-world math problems.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Sometimes, learners got puzzled with the difference between fractions and decimal numbers. Decimal numbers and
fractions are both representing the part in a whole. They are also both integers.

Analyze this problem:

Mrs. Guzman went to a nearby bakery. She bought a birthday cake with chocolate flavor for her 1-year old daughter.
When she reached home, she divided the cake into 10 equal parts. If the children shared 0.8 part from the cake, what
fractional part of the cake was shared by the children?

❖ What is asked in the problem?

❖ How will you answer the question in the problem?

Study the given illustrations.

Solution 1: Using Regions

Solution 2: Using Number Line

Solution 3: By Writing in Words then to Symbol

Another Example:

By Writing in Words then to Symbol

Rename 0.20 in fraction form.

EXERCISES:

Rename the following decimal numbers to fractions:

1. 0.3 = _____

2. 0.5 = _____

3. 0.08 = _____

4. 0.05 = _____

5. 0.09 = _____
Let us try to recall about the place value of whole numbers.

Identify the place value 7 in each numeral.

Hundreds
1.) 1 276 - _________________

Tens
2.) 9786 - __________________

Ones
3.) 7 982 - _________________
Ten thousands
4.) 13 457 - ________________
Thousands
5.) 62 279 - _____________
Place Value is the position of a digit in a number. Just like whole numbers, decimal numbers have place values. If we have
place value chart for whole numbers, we have also what we called decimal place value chart for decimal numbers. In our
decimal number system, the value of a digit depends on its place, or position, in the number. Each place has a value of 10
times the place to its right. The place before the decimal point has smallest value in the set of whole numbers and the
place after the decimal point has the greatest value in the set of decimal numbers.

• The decimal numbers are placed to the right of the decimal point which is represented by a dot. The dot is what we
called the decimal point.

• Thus, as we move from left to right, the place value of digits gets divided by 10, meaning the decimal place value
determines the tenths and hundredths. A tenth means one tenth or 1/10. In decimal form, it is 0.1. Hundredth means
1/100. In decimal form, it is 0.01.

• But to easily give the place value and value of a decimal number, we use Decimal place value chart.
Study the problem

A. Identifying the Place Value

Audrey bought a lot of candies with her money and has left 75 centavo coins in her coin purse. What is the place
value of each digit?

How do you write 75 centavos in decimal?

Parts of a decimal number

Now, you can see that decimal point separates the whole number and the decimal part. In the problem given, you can
write 75 centavos as 0.75 in decimal form.

Study how 0.75 written on the decimal place value chart.

In 0.75 the digit 0 is a place holder for the ones place. The digit 7 is in the tenths place and the digit 5 is in the
hundredths place.
B. Identifying the Value

Lana loves to drink calamansi juice. She decided to plant calamansi in their backyard. After two years, she harvested
0.25 kilogram of calamansi and share them to her friends. What is the value of each digit?

How many kilograms of calamansi did she harvest?

Decimal place value chart

In the given:

The digit 0 is in the place value ones so its value is 0.

The digit 2 is the place value of tenths so its value is 0.2.

The digit 5 is in the place value hundredths, its value is 0.05.

EXERCISES:

Give the place value and value of each underlined digit.

Place Value Value

1.) 0.05 Hundredths

______________ 0.05
______________
2.) 0.13 Tenths
______________ 0.1
______________

3.) 0.16 Hundredths

______________ 0.06
______________

4.) 0.46 Hundredths

______________ 0.06
______________

5.) 0.79 Tenths

______________ 0.7
______________
Before moving on to the next topic, let’s try to recall the lesson in giving the place value and value of decimal numbers
through hundredths.

What digit in tenths place. What digit in hundredths place. What digit in thousandths place.

1) 423.16 1 1) 387.215 1 1) 5.829 9

2) 5.2 2 2) 2.674 7 2) 67.208 8
3) 235.46 4 3) 92.561 6 3) 76.943 3

4) 86.357 3 4) 54.362 6 4) 123.567 7

Study the problem

Lalaine wants to make a dress for her favorite doll. She found her Dad’s old t-shirt and used 0.65 meters of it to
make a new dress for her doll. How will you read 0.65?

How can we read and write decimal number correctly?

A. Reading Decimal numbers

When reading decimal number, we need to follow certain steps:

First, look at the rightmost digit to identify its place value, next read it like reading a whole number and lastly say the
place value of the last digit.

The decimal 0.65 is read as sixty-five hundredths

These are some examples in reading decimal numbers.

0.6 is read as six tenth

0.07 is read as seven hundredths
0.25 is read as twenty-five hundredths
B. Writing Decimal numbers

To write decimal number using words, just remember how you read it or follow the procedure below.

hundredths
We write down the number to right of the decimal point. In this case we have the
number 65 to the right of the decimal point (can be write as “and”) and followed

tenths
ones by the place value of the last digit, so we write this number using words as
follows.

0.65 sixty-five hundredths

Another example:

nine tenths is written as 0.9

two hundredths is written as 0.02

fifteen hundredths is written as 0.15

twenty-five hundredths is written as 0.25

EXERCISES:

Write the following decimals in words

six hundredths
1. 0.06 _________________________________

fourteen hundredths
2. 0.14 ________________________________
twenty-six hundredths
3. 0.26 _________________________________
forty-five hundredths
4. 0.45 _________________________________

fifty-eight hundredths
5. 0.58 _________________________________
