Waste Generation and Management

Waste generation and management can impact people's health and the environment. Various materials used in everyday life produce different types of solid, liquid, and gaseous waste. If not managed properly, waste can pollute land, water, and air while contributing to issues like climate change and disease. Proper waste management processes aim to reduce these harms by methods like composting, incineration, landfilling, and reducing waste production through reusable items and consumption choices.

WHAT IS WASTE?
Waste are unwanted or unusable materials.
Waste is any substance discarded after the
primary use, or is worthless, defective and of
no use.
Some examples of waste
Plastic cups
Papers
Rags
Metal
Broken glass
Broken batteries
Etc.
What is waste generation?
Waste generation includes all materials
discarded, whether or not they are later
recycled or disposed in a landfill.
CLASSIFICATION OF WASTE
 BIODEGRADABLE WASTE  HAZARDOUS WASTES
-a type of waste in which can be degraded by -substances unsafe to us commercially,
other living organisms, typically originating industrially, agriculturally, or economically and
from plant or animal resources( paper, wood, have any of the following properties:
fruits, and others) ignitability, corosivity, reactivity, &toxicity.

 NON-BIODEGRADABLE WASTE  NON-HAZARDOUS WASTE

- any material that cannot be broken down by - substances safe to use and do not have any of
natural organisms and acts as a source of those properties mentioned above. These
pollution. These are the wastes that cannot be substances usually create disposal problems.
dissolved by natural agents( plastics, steel
cans, glass bottle)
DID YOU KNOW THAT…

The world generates 2.01 billion tons of municipal solid waste

annually, with at least 33 percent of that-extremely conservatively-
not managed in an environmentally safe manner. Worldwide, waste
generated per person per day averages 0.74 kilograms but ranges
widely, from .11 to 4.54 kilograms.
HOW DOES PEOPLE GENERATE DIFFERENT TYPES OF WASTE (SOLID,
LIQUID, AND GASEOUS) AS THEY MAKE USE OF VARIOUS MATERIALS
AND RESOURCES IN EVERYDAY LIFE?

 Wastes can be generated from various sources and materials in our

everyday life. This includes trash or garbage from households,
schools, offices, marketplaces, restaurants and other public places.
Everyday items like food debris, used plastic bags, soda cans and
plastic water bottles, broken furniture, broken home appliances,
clothing, etc.
 Wastes generated in small, medium, and large cities and town s are
about 0.1-0.5 kg per day respectively.
HOW DIFFERENT TYPES OF WASTE AFFECT
PEOPLE ’S HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT?

Directly or indirectly, waste affect our health and well-being

in many ways: methane gases contribute to climate change, air
pollutants are released into the atmosphere, freshwater
sources are contaminated, crops are grown in contaminated
soil and fish ingest toxic chemicals, subsequently ending up on
our dinner plates.
Land Pollution
Water pollution
Air pollution
Climate change
Extreme weather
Diseases
Plant death
Animal and marine death
Loss of habitats
Lower biodiversity
WHAT IS WASTE MANAGEMENT?
 Waste management or also called as waste disposal includes the
processes and actions required to manage waste from its generation
to its final disposal.
WASTE DISPOSAL METHODS
1. COMPOSTING 2. INCINERATION
3. LANDFILLS 4. WASTE COMPACTION
5. BIOGAS GENERATION 6. VERMICOMPOSTING
What is the importance of waste management?
Waste management is important as it saves the
toxic effects of inorganic and biodegradable
element present in waste. If we don’t manage our
waste properly, it can harm our health, our
environment, and even our prosperity.
10 WAYS TO REDUCE THE
PRODUCTION OF WASTE AT HOME,
IN SCHOOL, AND AROUND THE
COMMUNITY
1. USE OF REUSABLE BOTTLE/CUP FOR
BEVERAGES ON-THE GO

2. USE REUSABLE GROCERY BAGS, AND

NOT JUST FOR GROCERIES

3. PURCHASE WISELY AND

RECYCLE
4. COMPOST IT!
5.AVOID SINGLE-USE FOOD AND DRINK
CONTAINERS AND UTENSILS

6. BUY SECONDHAND ITEMS AND DONATE

USED GOODS
7. SHOP LOCAL FARMERS MARKETS AND BUY
IN BULK TO REDUCE PACKAGING

8.DONATE OLD THINGS THAT YOU ARE NOT

USING ANYMORE LIKE SCHOOL SUPPLIES
9. USE RECYCLED MATERIALS 10. CONSUME LESS
FOR ART PROJECTS
We cannot avoid the production or
generation of waste, however, we can
help in reducing the production of it by
being aware of our actions.

SOLUTION NOT PART
OF THE POLLUTION.”
