Hygiene of Environment

The document discusses the environmental problems faced by cities including poor air and water quality, waste disposal issues, and high energy consumption exacerbated by increasing population density. It notes that urban populations interact with and change their environment through consumption, and the polluted urban environment then affects public health. The presentation aims to address these issues through sustainable urban planning and development, reducing pollution, improving services, and increasing green spaces.

ENVIRONMENTAL

PROBLEMS OF
CITIES
Presented by: Ali Muhammad Muazzam

Content:

■ Introduction
■ Relevance of topic
■ Goal & objectives of presentation
■ Basic material
■ Conclusion
■ Bibliography
Introduction:

■ Poor air and water quality, insufficient water availability,

waste-disposal problems, and high energy consumption are
exacerbated by the increasing population density and demands
of urban environments. Strong city planning will be essential
in managing these and other difficulties as the world’s urban
areas swell.
Relevance of topic:

■ Environmental Effects of Urbanization. Urban populations

interact with their environment. Urban people change their
environment through their consumption of food, energy, water,
and land. And in turn, the polluted urban environment affects
the health and quality of life of the urban population.
■ People who live in urban areas have very different
consumption patterns than residents in rural areas.
Goal & objectives of presentation:

■ Focuses environmental efforts on recovery of ecosystems,

conserving biodiversity and the natural and cultural
environment, good human health, efficient material cycles free
from dangerous substances, sustainable use of natural
resources, efficient energy use, and patterns of consumption.
Basic material:

■ Intensive urban growth can lead to greater poverty, with local

governments unable to provide services for all people.
■ Concentrated energy use leads to greater air pollution with
significant impact on human health.
■ Automobile exhaust produces elevated lead levels in urban air.
■ Large volumes of uncollected waste create multiple health
hazards.
■ Urban development can magnify the risk of environmental
hazards such as flash flooding.
■ Pollution and physical barriers to root growth promote loss of
urban tree cover.
Solutions:

■ Combat poverty by promoting economic development and job

creation.
■ Involve local community in local government.
■ Reduce air pollution by upgrading energy use and alternative
transport systems.
■ Create private-public partnerships to provide services such as
waste disposal and housing.
■ Plant trees and incorporate the care of city green spaces as a
key element in urban planning.
Conclusion:

■ Our natural environment makes human life possible, and our

cultural environment helps define who we are. It is therefore
essential that our population and economic growth are
environmentally sustainable.
