Silent Method

The silent way method is a language teaching method developed by Caleb Gattegno where the teacher speaks as little as possible and students are encouraged to produce the language. Key characteristics include the teacher being largely silent, students being active in producing the language, and the use of color charts and Cuisenaire rods. The objectives are to teach basic language elements, grammar knowledge, and near-native fluency through a focus on pronunciation. Principles emphasize student self-expression, teacher silence, peer and self-correction, and assessing students through observation rather than formal evaluation.

Definition
List The silent way method is a method of language teaching that triggered by Caleb Gattegno.
The silent way is called because “the aim of the teacher is to say as little as possible in order can
be in control of what she wants to say” . In this method, the students are the center of the
learning process, and the teacher should be largely silent. In other word, the teacher should be
less talk during learning activity in the classroom, and the learners are encouraged to be more
active in producing language, In addition, students are responsible for their own work.

The Objective
According to Richard & Rodger (1986, p. 103) there are several
objectives of silent way method:

• To confer the basic elements of target language for the

beginner students’ oral and aural facility.
• To supply an underlying practical knowledge of the language
grammar to the learners.
• To get a near native fluency, correct pronunciation and
prosodic elements mastery in the target language
The Principles of Silent Way
The following are some principles in silent way method based on Larsen-

conclusion
The Silent Way method is the name of a method of language
teaching devised by Calleb Cattegno. It is based on the premise
that the teacher should be silent as much as possible in the
classroom but the learner should encouraged to produce as much
language as possible. Elements of the silent way, particularly the
use of color charts and colored cuisenaire rods, grew out Cattegno
