Tag question = a statement + a mini-question
01. Normal verbs
Statement Tag question
S + V, don't/doesn't/didn't + S?
S + don’t/doesn't/didn't V do/does/did + S?

(Note: S in tag questions should be one of I, we, they, you, he,


she, it)
Ex: Lan goes to school, doesn't she?
02. To be
Statement Tag question
S + to be, to be not + S?
S + to be not,
to be + S?

(Note: S should be one of I, we, they, you, he, she, it)


Ex: The flowers are beautiful, aren't they?
03. Modal verbs
Statement Tag question
S + modal verb, modal verb not + S?

S + modal verb not, modal verb + S?

(Note: S should be one of I, we, they, you, he, she, it)


Ex: Lan can put a pen in your bag, can't she?
04. Perfect verbs
Statement Tag question
S + have/ has/ had + P2, have/ has/ had not + S?

S + have/ has/ had not + P2, have/ has/ had + S?

(Note: S should be one of I, we, they, you, he, she, it)


Ex: She has done all the homework, hasn’t she?
Note
When the subject is everyone, everybody, someone, somebody,
no one, nobody, anyone, anybody, the subject in tag questions is
they.

When the subject is everything, something, nothing, anything,


the subject in tag questions is It.
Special cases 02
01. Negative adverbs
The adverbs never, rarely, seldom, hardly, barely, scarcely, little or
few have a negative sense. We use positive tag question.
Ex: He never came again, did he?
02. Special pronoun

Statement Tag question


I am …, aren’t I?
I am not am I?

Ex: I’m right to say that, am I not/ aren’t I?


I’m not right to say that, am I?
3. Negative pronoun
The pronouns nothing, no one, none, nobody have a negative sense. We
use positive tag question.
Ex: Nobody came, did they?
4. Suggestion

Statement Tag question


Let’s…., shall we?
Let’s go shopping, shall we?
5. Order

Statement Tag question


V…. / Don’t V…, will you?
Don’t talk in class, will you?
6. State verbs
I think/ believe/ suppose….. S + V
Use S in tag question
