Measures of Central Tendency Ungrouped Data

The document discusses different measures of central tendency including the mean, median, and mode. It provides examples of calculating the mean, median, and mode for both ungrouped and grouped data sets. Students are assigned practice problems to calculate the mean, median, and mode of various data sets.

MEASURE OF

CENTRAL
TENDENCY
UNGROUPED DATA
Activity #2: “AVERAGE TEST”

Now let us have the game called

AVERAGE TEST
I need 11 students to give me their
wish grade for the 3 Quarter. Then
rd

we are going to solve for the mean,

median and mode of their grade.
MEAN
• The mean is the most commonly used
measure of central tendency.
• When we speak of average, we always
refer to the mean.

x=
MEAN
Example #1
Six friends in a Mathematics class of 20
students receives test grades of 92, 84, 65,
76, 88 and 90. Find the mean of this test
scores.
x = == = 82.5
MEAN
Example #2
5 participants of the CAVRAA got a
scores of 85, 95, 90, 88 and 92. Find their
average scores.

x = == = 90
Activity #3: “FINDING MEAN”

Direction: Analyze the problem and

answer what is asked.
1. The age of five contestants in
Statistics Quiz Bee are the following;
18, 17, 18, 19 and 18. Find their
average age.
2. The 6 athletes are gathered together to
get their height in cm. And the following
data are collected; 66, 55, 58, 66, 55 and
58. Find their average height.
3. Out of 50 items, the 7 students who
joined in Math Wizard got the scores of 43,
44, 40, 48, 39, 44, and 43. Find their
average score.
MEDIAN
• Median is the midpoint of the data array.
• Before finding this value, the data must be
arranged in order from least to greatest or
vise versa.
• The median will either be a specific value or
will fall between two values.
~
X = x1 x2 x3 x 4 x 5
~
X = x1 x2 x3 x 4 x 5 x 6
= 3 4
Example #3

Seven mothers were selected and

given a blood pressure check. Their
blood pressure were recorded
below.
135 121 116 130 121 131 121
Find their median.
Arranged the data

116 119 121 121 130 131 135

Median = 121
Example #4
Eight novels were randomly selected
and the numbers of pages were
recorded as follows:
415 398 402 400 420 415 407 425
Find their median.
Arranged the data

398 400 402 407 415 415 420 425

Median = 411
Activity #4: “FINDING MEDIAN”

Direction: Analyze the problem and

answer what is asked.
1. The age of five contestants in
Statistics Quiz Bee are the following;
18, 17, 18, 19 and 18. Find the
median in the given data.
2.The 6 athletes are gathered together to
get their height in cm. And the following
data are collected; 66, 55, 58, 66, 55 and 58.
Find the median in the given data.

3.Out of 50 items, the 7 students who joined

in Math Wizard got the scores of 43, 44, 40,
48, 39, 44, and 43. Find the median in the
given data..
MODE
• Mode is the value that occurs/appears
most often in the data set.
• For us to determine the frequent
occurrence of a data. We are going to
arranged them first in ascending or
descending order.
Mode is classified as:
unimodal (1 value with frequency occurrence)
bimodal (2 values with frequency occurrence)
trimodal (3 values with frequency occurrence)
multimodal (4 and above values with
frequency occurrence)

^
Symbol of mode: X
Example #5

Find the mode of the given

data set
10 38 15 45 36 22 47 15 18
Arranged the data

10 15 15 18 22 36 38 45 47

Mode = 15 (Unimodal)
Example #6

Find the mode of the given

data set
12 14 23 45 33 24 12 45 60
Arranged the data

12 12 14 23 24 33 45 45 60

Mode = 12 and 45 (Bimodal)

Activity #5: “FINDING MODE”

Direction: Analyze the problem and

answer what is asked.
1. The age of five contestants in
Statistics Quiz Bee are the following;
18, 17, 18, 19 and 18. Find the mode
in the given data.
2.The 6 athletes are gathered together to
get their height in cm. And the following
data are collected; 66, 55, 58, 66, 55 and 58.
Find the median in the given data.

3.Out of 50 items, the 7 students who joined

in Math Wizard got the scores of 43, 44, 40,
48, 39, 44, and 43. Find the median in the
given data..
Activity #6: BY GROUP

Direction: Group yourself

according to your gender (male,
female). Answer what is asked in
the given scenario.
Group 1

The grade 10-Emerald students held their

Math examination last week. The boy’s
scores were collected as follows; 37, 29,
37, 29, 42, 32, 36, 39, 40, 29, 40 35, 32,
20, 50, 52, and 34. Find the mean,
median and mode of the given data.
Group 2

The grade 10-Emerald students held

their Math examination last week. The
girl’s scores were collected as follows;
43, 43, 53, 43, 41, 28, 37, 33, 35, 40,
40, and 46 . Find the mean, median and
mode of the given data.
Activity #4: Give Me Example!

From those examples and activities, we

can say that mean, median and mode
has something to do in real life
situation. Kindly give me examples
where do you encounter mean, median
and mode in your daily life.
ACTIVITY #7: “ANSWER ME”

Find the mean, median and mode of

the ungrouped data below
11, 43, 22, 45, 67, 34, 33, 32, 56,
12, 34, 22, 68, 56, 67, 34, 45, 32,
14, 20, 30
Assignment:

For your assignment to be passed

tomorrow. Kindly research on the
difference of grouped data and
ungrouped data in getting the mean,
median and mode of data.
