STRUCTURE OF A REVIEW

• An introduction in which you give the main details (e.g. names of film/book, writer/director, main
stars/characters, etc):
• This well-written / informative / fascinating / thought-provoking book is...
• The film/book/play is set in... / tells the story of... / is based on... / recounts events in the lives of...
• The film/play stars... / is directed by... / is the sequel to...
A main body (of two or more paragraphs) which focuses on the details requested by the rubric (e.g. description, narration, acting,
plot, analysis, criticism, etc):
• The plot revolves around... / involves... / focuses on... / has an unexpected twist...
• The story begins with... / unfolds... / reaches a dramatic climax when... / explores the themes of alienation and intimacy... /
provides a fascinating/valuable/revealing insight into...
• The script seemed (rather) conventional / gripping / dramatic / fascinating / suspense-filled / fast-moving / far-fetched /
predictable / confusing / dull / unimaginative / contrived to me.
• The plot struck me as completely bizarre / absurd / incomprehensible.

A conclusion which can contain an overall assessment of the work and a recommendation, usually with
justification:
• I would unreservedly recommend this book/film to anyone who...
• I would definitely give it a miss / I would strongly encourage you not to waste your money on...

• On the whole, I wouldn't recommend it.


• My advice is (not)... I would advise against... Viewers would be well advised (not)...
• It will have you roaring with laughter / rushing out to buy the sequel.
• It is a definite must-see.
• All in all, the series/novel is certainly (not) worth seeing/reading, since...
• In view of the fact that...
• It is a classic of its kind. / It is sure to be a hit / best-seller.
