Introduction to BIM:
First there was Pencil and Paper. Then came Lines, Arcs of CAD. Then CAD went to 3-Dimensional.
BIM
Intelligent 3-Dimensional model based Process.

What is BIM:
• A Process that equips Architecture, Engineering & Construction with tools to more effectively :
1. PLAN
2. DESIGN
3. CONSTRUCT
4. MANAGE
• Not only used during the construction but also throughout the life cycle of the constructed project.

• Hierarchy of BIM Roles in India BIM BIM
Coordinator Coordinator
(Stru) (MEP)
• There are standards for BIM in COWI for Object Naming and Drawing standards.
• Network Production Base focuses on implementation of BIM workflows through the development of standards
and procedures.
• Under QMS (Quality Management System) COWI uses Checkforms and Checklists.

Introduction to Autodesk Revit:
Revit is Building Information Modelling software which is beyond 3D modelling for visualization.
• You are creating a virtual building with all it's properties in your workstation.
• It allows users to :
• Revit is 4D BIM capable with tools to plan and track various stages in the buildings lifecycle, from concept to construction
• In the one box of Revit you will find tools to help you with MEP, Architecture and Structural design.

Advantages Of Revit:
• Revit is a database, you can add data to any project and those changes will be updated through out the
model.
• Documentation is no longer manual, the information is already there. All you have to do is to extract it.
• Parametric Components: Every single element is no longer a 2D entity, each element is a 3D object.
• Work Sharing: Revit allows all project data to be stored in single project file and allows multiple users to
work on the same project file and merge their changes with every save.
• Increases the efficiency due to Coordination between different disciplines namely MEP, Structure,
Architecture.

Family Types:
System
Family
1. Hard Coded in Revit, can't be created.
2. Different types can be created out of them.
3. Act as Hosts for Component Families.
4. E.g. Walls, Floors, Roof, etc.
Component
Family
1. We can create these Families in Family Editor.
2. These are Host based families and are attached to the system Families.
3. These are created outside the main project file.
4. Can be saved as individual files and can be loaded into any project using
Load Family Editor.
Inplace
Family
1. These can be created inside project environment.
2. Users can create families specific to a project.
3. Can be saved outside the project as loadable Revit Families.

Types of Properties:
1. Type Property • If we change the TYPE Property, the property of all the elements in that family changes.
• These can be edited by clicking on the EDIT tab of the property window.
• Changes made to any instance property only affects the particular instance or element
2. Instance property selected.
**Change a Type Parameter and all the instances of that type will change.
**Change an Instance Parameter and only that specific instance of the family will change

2.Quick Access Toolbar: Contains a set of default tools which can be customized as per the
users use.
4.View Control Bar: The View Control Bar provides quick access to functions that affect the
current view.
5.Drawing Area: It displays views of the current project. Each time you open a view in a project,
the view displays in the drawing area.
6.Project Browser: It shows a logical hierarchy for all views, schedules, sheets, groups.
7.Info Bar: This is a sort of search engine where in we can search for any command and help
inside the Revit.
8.Status Bar: Provides you tips or hints on what to do when you select a family.
