Future forms: will/ shall and be

going to
LEVEL 4 (Unit 4A)
Watch out!

 The correct use of future forms in English is always complicated because it depends on the
concept the speaker wants to convey: a plan, prediction, offer, etc.
 REMEMBER:
 * NOT use the PRESENT SIMPLE instead of “Will” for offers or promises, e.g. NOT I
give you a lift to the airport.
 *Don`t use “Will” instead of the PRESENT CONTINUOUS or GOING TO for plans, e.g.
I`ll go to see my grandmother at the weekend. (This would imply that you have just made
the decision)
 *We can also use “won`t” for “refuse to”, e.g. The kids won`t eat their vegetables.
 *GOING TO is often pronounced /g n / and written informally as “GONNA”, e.g. in song
lyrics
 *There is sometimes very Little difference between a plan and an arrangement, and we can
often use either “be going to” or the “present continuous” when there is an arrangement to
do something - sth has been organized:
 e.g. I`m going to the dentist tomorrow (= I have an appontment)
 e.g. Liz and Nick are coming for dinner tonight (we have invited them, and they have
said they are going to come)
 If we need to refer to the future from a time in the past, we use “was going to”. We often
use this structure to talk about thigs we intended to do , but then didn`t …
