Q2-Sci9-Unit 01

This document discusses chemical bonding and the octet rule. It contains learning competencies around explaining the quantum mechanical model of the atom, recognizing different types of compounds based on properties, and understanding different types of chemical bonding. It also discusses how valence electrons are determined from the electron configuration, and provides examples of identifying the valence electron for different elements. Finally, it explains the octet rule and how atoms bond to achieve stability by gaining, losing, or sharing electrons to attain eight electrons in their outer shell.

is 8. Identify me configuration,

classification of the following elements:
Beryllium Be is an
element in the Group
IIA with 2 valence
electrons.
Oxygen O has 5 valence
electrons
Flourine B is found in
the Group VIIA.
THE OCTET RULE
All elements aim to follow the “octet rule”, a rule that
allows the atom/element to have 8 valence electron. To
achieve this, they have to bond with other elements. The
atoms with lesser valence electrons like Potassium with 1
valence electron just give off their electrons because it is
easy for them to give theirs than to get from other to
complete the 8 valence electron. Those with 5-7 valence
electrons however, waits for other atom to give their
electrons off in order for it to complete the octet rule.
THE OCTET RULE
The octet rule, one of the fundamental
rules in chemistry, states that all atoms
undergo bonding by gaining, losing or
sharing their electrons to achieve the same
stability (having eight electrons in their
outermost shell) of the noble gas’ electronic
arrangement.
