RPNW Day 3

This document discusses various distress signals including: 1. Rocket parachute flares that burn bright red and reach an altitude of at least 300 meters within 40 seconds. 2. Hand flares that burn bright red with an intensity of 15,000 candelas for at least 1 minute. 3. Buoyant smoke signals that emit orange-colored smoke continuously for at least 3 minutes without any flame. It emphasizes the importance of being careful when cleaning the bridge to avoid accidentally triggering distress buttons, and of promptly notifying the master if this occurs so the alert can be cancelled.

DISTRESS SIGNAL

Signal sent by radio

telephony ( MAYDAY )
DISTRESS SIGNAL

International code signal

of distress indicated by
flags “ N “ and “ C “
a gun or other explosive signals fired at interval of
about one minute

a continuous sounding with any fog signalling

apparatus; rockets or shells throwing red stars fired
at short intervals

a signal made up by radiotelegraphy or by any other

signalling method consisting of the group ( SOS ) in
the Morse Code;

10
a signal sent by radiotelephony consisting of the
spoken word “ Mayday “;

the international code signal of distress indicated by

N. C.

a signal consisting of a square flag having above or

below it a ball or anything resembling a ball;

11
flames on the vessel
The signals to indicate(as far
distress and from a burning
needs assistance are: tar

barrel, oil barrel, etc.);
a rocket parachute flare or hand flare showing a red
light;
a smoke signal giving off orange-colored smoke

slowly and repeatedly raising and lowering arms out-
stretched to each side

 signals transmitted by emergency position
indicating radio beacon
 approved signals transmitted by radio
communication system

The signals to indicate distress and needs
assistance are:
  Under the GMDSS, activation of distress signals are simplified.
 Distress signals may be activated by pushing a button or key
on any of these equipment.
 Deck hands when cleaning the bridge, care must be exercised
not to accidentally trigger these buttons or INMARSAT keys.
Once the signal is triggered, it will set the Coast Earth Station
which will then alert all other stations.
 The first thing to do in case the alarm was set off accidentally, is
to call the master or duty officer.
 To cancel the alert signal a message must be sent to the CES
cancelling the message
