Definitions
Definition is a core part of any dictionary. Writing basic
definitions need skill, practice, and sometimes help.

There are basic guidelines to follow when writing a definition:


1. Just the (dictionary) facts
- In writing definitions, clarity, brevity and conciseness must be observed.

2. Avoid complicated terms


- Avoid terms that are uncommon or more technical than the term being
defined. The aim of a definition is to clarify meaning.

- Use common English words in explanations whenever possible. The more
ordinary a term is, the more users will avail.
4. Avoid circularity
- It is not good to give the definition of a word with that same word in the
definition. Use different terms.
5. Make it simple
- Write with basic grammatical structures rather than complicated ones.

2 WAYS OF WRITING A TECHNICAL DEFINITION

1. Parenthetical definitions- often you can define a


term by using a more familiar synonym in
parenthesis.
Example: The density (thickness) of the syrup made it
difficult to pour.

2. Sentence definitions- more complex terms may need a sentence


definition (which may be more than one sentence). Sentence definition
follows a set of patterns.

Sentence: Mercury is a substance that is liquid at room temperature.


OPERATIONAL DEFINITION- it is somewhat a detailed
explanati on of the technical terms especially in conducti ng
research.

Example: Depression is defined conceptually as a state of being in which
the individual exhibits/displays aggressiveness and has sad and gloomy
thoughts.

They are the Grade 7 white Class who are sampled of this study. In
this study, they were under taken the pre-test activity where it
was composed of the part of speech which are: Noun, Pronoun,
Adjective, Verb, Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction and Interjection
and post-test activity where it was also composed of the part of
speech which are: Noun, Pronoun, Adjective, Verb, Adverb,
Preposition, Conjunction and Interjection.
Example: Grammar

Grammar is the science of language. It deals with parts of


speech, inflection, and syntax. This will determine the
English grammar proficiency among Grade 7 students of
Lataban National High School. And if the elementary years
of the respondents that serve as the formative years of
English education are highly efficient.

Write TD if it is technical definition and OD if it is operational definition.
