Excretion of Plants

Plants lack specialized excretory organs like animals but excrete waste through various means. They release oxygen and shed leaves, bark, and other parts containing waste. Plants also excrete gums, resins, latex and milky sap containing non-toxic compounds, which can have medicinal benefits in some cases. Excretion helps plants eliminate toxins and waste without complex organs.

A REPORT ON

EXCRETION OF
z

PLANTS
z

INTRODUCTION

 Elimination of toxic and waste products from the body is called

excretion.

 Organisms like animals have an advanced and specialized

system for excretion. But plants lack a well-developed
excretory system like that in animals.

 They do not have special organs for excretion. Thus,

excretion in plants is not so complex
z
IN WHAT WAYS DOES EXCRETION
HAPPENS IN PLANTS ?

 Releasing of O2

 Shedding of leaves

 As gums

 As milk products

 As bark transporation, Etc.,

z
GEL TYPE EXCRETION

 The gums, oils, latex, resins, etc. are some waste

products stored in plant parts like barks, stems,
leaves, etc. Eventually, plants shed off these parts.

 Example , aloevera , drumstick tree, badam tree.

 Gums contain the salts of potassium, calcium, and

magnesium, known as “polyuronides”. Mucilages
are sulfuric acid esters; the ester group is a
complex polysaccharide. The sugars in gums and
mucilages are galactose and arabinose.
Moringa oleifera
z

 KINGDOM : Plantae

 DIVISION : Angiospermae

 CLASS : Magnoliopsidae

 ORDER : Brassicales

 FAMILY : Moringaceae

 GENUS : Moringa

 SPECIES : Moringa oleifera

z
DRUMSTICK TREE

Drumstick tree gum has a

number of therapeutic
properties, including antipyretic,
antioxidant, anti-asthmatic
astringent, and rubefacient
properties, and is used to treat
syphilis, gastrointestinal
problems, and rheumatism.
z
BENEFITS OF DRUMSTICK TREE
GUM

 Drumstick resin is mixed with

mustard seeds and used as a
remedy for arthritis.

 Moringa gum is used to treat skin

rashes, skin breaks, itching,
allergies, and other skin diseases.
z

ALOEVERA
 KINGDOM : Plantae

 DIVISION : Angiospermae

 CLASS : Monocotyledonae

 ORDER : Asparagales

 FAMILY : Asphodelaceae

 GENUS : Aloe

 SPECIES : Aloevera
z
ALOEVERA
 Aloevera contains approximately
98.5% water, while the mucilage or
gel consists of about 99.5% water.

 The remaining 0.5 – 1% solid

material consists of a range of
compounds including water-soluble
and fat-soluble vitamins, minerals,
enzymes, polysaccharides, phenolic
compounds and organic acids
z
BENEFITS OF ALOEVERA GEL
 It contains healthful plant compounds

 It has antioxidant and antibacterial

properties

 It accelerates wound healing

 It reduces dental plaque

 It helps treat canker sores

 It reduces constipation

 It may improve skin and prevent wrinkles

 It lowers blood sugar levels

z MILK AS EXCRETION
 Thousands of plant species release a
milky white liquid called latex when cut or
crushed.

 The content of latex is typically a mixture

of oils, gums, resins, proteins, starches,
sugars, tannins, and alkaloids which give
it a high pH.

 It is a complex emulsion of proteins,

alkaloids, starches, tannins, resins and
gums. It coagulates upon exposure to air.
z Carica papaya

 KINGDOM : Plantae

 DIVISION : Angiospermae

 CLASS : Eudicotyledonae

 ORDER : Brassicales

 FAMILY : Caricaceae

 GENUS : Carica

 SPECIES : Carica papaya

z PAPAYA TREE

 Latex of papaya has been reported to

contain a large amount of cysteine
proteases, namely, papain.

 A crucial factor in the defense of the

papaya tree against lepidopteran larvae
such as oligophagous Samia ricini and
two notorious polyphagous
pests, Mamestra brassicae
and Spodoptera litura .
z Calotropis

 KINGDOM : Plantae

 DIVISION : Angiosperms

 CLASS : Eudicotyledonae

 ORDER : Gentianales

 FAMILY : Apocynaceae

 GENUS : calotropis

 SPECIES : Calotropis gigantea

z
calotropis
 They are commonly known as milkweeds because
of the latex they produce. Calotropis species are
considered common weeds in some parts of the
world.

 The latex of plant contains cardiac glycosides ,fatty

acid and calcium carbonate

 It is a poisonous plant

 The latex of Calotropis gigantea contains  resinols

as esters of steamvolatile fatty acids (acetic and
isovaleric), cardiac poisons similar to usharin
and calcium oxalate.
z
BEFITS AND DISADVANTAGES

 It is the poisonous plant

 The latex sap of plant is cause of toxic

KERATOCONJUNCTIVITIS(vision loss)

 The latex is used in different conditions

as leucoderma, tumors, expectorant,
analgesic, anticonvulsant, anti-in- flammatory,
piles, leprosy, asthma, enlargement of spleen
and liver, joint swelling
z SHEADDING OF LEAVES

 Abscission in plants is the shedding of

leaves. When leaves are about to fall, plants
absorb all useful materials from them. Falling
leaves contain only waste materials.
Therefore, abscission of leaves is an
example of excretion in plants.
 All waste products , dead tissue , waste
cell,etc
z

CONCLUSION

 Plants excrete many products .Even release of oxygen is type of

excretion .

 From this three Type of excretion some have many useful benefits
and some even have some disadvantages.

 Plants don’t have any special excretory organs . Excretion of plants

has many benefits of it
