Link Up Operation Presentation

A link-up operation involves the planned meeting of friendly forces and requires careful consideration of recognition signals, actions at the link-up site, and contingency plans in case of enemy contact before, during, or after the link-up. Detailed procedures are outlined for conducting link-up operations, including reconnaissance of the link-up site by the first arriving patrol, use of recognition signals and countersigns by the second patrol, and establishment of security after joining at the link-up point. Thorough planning, use of effective recognition methods, and maintaining radio contact are emphasized as important factors for successful link-up operations.

LINK UP OPERATION

LINK-UP OPERATION

A Link-up is a meeting of friendly ground forces or joining of two or

more units in a particular combat area. Link-up depends on control, detailed
planning and stealth. This also includes reentry to friendly lines after an
operation.

CONSIDERATIONS DURING LINK-UP OPN

1.Site situation. The site should be easy to find especially at night. Both
primary and alternate sites are needed. It must have cover and
concealment, easy to defend for a short time and offers access and escape
routes.

2.Recognition Signals. Far and near visual signals are required to keep
friendly units form misencounters. Visual and oral recognition must be
planned. These are of two types. The first is a signal and countersign
exchange between units. These can be a challenge and password. These
are meant to authenticate the identity of the units on a link-up.
The second types are signals placed on the link-
up site. Examples are stones placed in a pre-
arranged pattern, markings on trees, etc, which
mark the exact location of the link-up site. The first
unit to the link-up site places the sign and
positions the contact team to observe it. The next
unit then stops at the signal and initiates the far
recognition signal.
3.Actions at Link-up site:

4.Contingency plans:

a. Enemy contact before link-up (What do you do if

one of you figures in an encounter before link-up?)
b. Enemy contact during link-up
c. Enemy contact after link-up
d. How long to wait at the link-up site?
e. What to do if some elements do not make it to the
link-up site?
f. Alternate link-up sites and rally points.

PROCEDURE FOR LINK-UP OPERATIONS

First Patrol – in the area of operation call in the spare for recon
of link-up site which becomes the patrol base and the base
patrol.

a. Team will stop at a safe distance from the link-up site and
conduct a security halt.
b. Team leader will call spare for recon of the link-up site to
sister patrol on their internal frequency.
c. Team leader will leave a five point contingency plan to include
rendezvous point and tentative patrol base.
d. The team conducts reconnaissance of the link-up site. They
may either use the leader’s recon or the recon by force method.
e. Team leader will key off a prominent terrain feature or move
straight to the link-up site and secure the area by using any
clearing technique or secure the area by force.
f. Team leader will inform the other team that the link-up site is
secured.
Second Patrol will become the moving patrol once they received the
call from the first patrol.

a. Team leader will halt the team 200 to 400 meters from the link-up site.
Team leader will inform the stationary team that he will send a recon
element. This may also be used as the far recognition signal for the
teams.
b. Team leader will leave five point contingency plan to the left behind
troops to include the rendezvous point and tentative patrol base.
c. Team leader will conduct leader’s recon of the link-up site.
The team will key off a prominent terrain, post snipers, or move straight
d. to the link-up site.
e. Once the recon element is near the link-up, the moving team will give
the near recognition signal:
1.Hand and arm signals
2. Number combination

3. Moving patrol will either call his team to move forward or go
back physically and retrieves his team.

4. Base patrol leader will then order his team to widen the area
being secured so that there will be enough space for the two
teams.

5.Once both teams are in the link-up site, the teams will define
their sectors to be secured. All around security is established
before the teams coordinate for the next mission and moves out of
the link-up site as quickly as possible.
LINK-UP TECHNIQUES:

1. link-up operation must be thoroughly planned.

2.The countersign is one of the most important to be
considered when conducting link-up operations.
3. When conducting link-up, radio contact is one of the most
important factors to consider.
4. When conducting link-up, one group should not set too
specific a time to link-up.
5.The other group should know from what direction the
second group would come from.
6.The link-up area must be easily recognized.
7. Whoever arrives first at the link-up site should not
immediately enter the link-up site.
8.If you have a guide with you as you link-up, never allow him
to be up front.
