Troyo Axial Compression

This document provides an example problem for calculating axial compression in a timber column. A 300x300mm square timber column made of Molave wood is loaded with 6kN of dead load and 10kN of live load. The example shows calculations for allowable and ultimate compressive stress using ASD and LRFD methods. It is determined that a 250x250mm column size made of Molave wood with a compression stress parallel to grain of 15.4MPa is appropriate to support the given loads.

SAMPLE PROBLEM
Axial Compression: Case 3
Example:
A 300 x 300 mm square timber column is hinged at both ends with
effective length factor ( = 1.0 ). Column unbraced lengths 𝐿𝑥 = 𝐿𝑦 = 4
m. The square timber column is made-up of Molave with 80% stress
grade. Applying dead load 6 kN and live load 10 kN, determine its
allowable and ultimate compressive stress. Also, determine if the given
design is appropriate with the loadings needed.
300 mm

300 mm
Example : Axial Compression: Case 3
Allowable stress are:
• = 15.4 MPa (𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑙 𝑡𝑜 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑛).
• 𝐸 = 6.54 x MPa (𝑟𝑒𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑚𝑜𝑑𝑢𝑙𝑢𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦).
• = 6540(1-1.645(0.25))= 3850.425
• = x (1.03)/(1.66) = 2389.119127 MPa
• = 1.0; = 1.0; = 1.0; = 1.15; = 1.0; = 1.0
Solution:
Unfactored applied load; = 6 kN + 10 kN
= 16 kN
Factored applied load; = 1.2 (6 kN ) + 1.6 (10 kN)
= 23.2 kN
Assume column size say 300 x 300 mm (250 x 250 mm)
Effective length factor = 1.0
Example : Axial Compression: Case 3
Solution:
Solving the slenderness ratios about 𝑥−𝑥 and 𝑦−𝑦 axes
= = 36 < 50 ok
= = 36 < 50 ok

(a) ASD method

Solving 𝐸𝑚𝑖𝑛:
=
= (2389.119127)(1.0)(1.0)(1.0)(1.0)
= 2389.119127 MPa
Example : Axial Compression: Case 3
Solurion:
Solving Euler critical buckling stress:
=
= = 1.515 MPa

Solving the adjusted Allowable Compressive stress 𝐹𝑐∗

=
= (15.4)(1.15)(1.0)(1.0)(1.0)(1.0)
= 17.71 MPa

= = 0.086
Example : Axial Compression: Case 3
Solution:
Solving the column stability factor ASD
-
0.084
Solving the allowable compression stress;
= = (17.71)(0.084) = 1.488 MPa
Solving the unfactored allowable compression load capacity;
𝑃𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 =
= (1.488 MPa)(250 x 250) = 93,000 N
= 93 kN > 16 kN 𝑂𝑘
Hence use 300 x 300 mm (250 x 250 mm) wood with = 15.4 MPa
Example : Axial Compression: Case 3
Solution:
(𝑏) LRFD method:
Additional adjustment factors
= 2.40 for compression stress
= 1.76 buckling modulus
= 0.90 for compression stress
= 0.85 for buckling modulus
λ = 0.8 (1.2 𝐷 + 1.6 𝐿𝐿)

Solving the adjusted modulus of elasticity;

=
=(2389.119127)(1.0)(1.0)(1.0)(1.0)(1.76)(0.85)
= 3574.122214 MPa
𝑐 = 0.8 (𝑠𝑎𝑤𝑛 𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒r)
Example : Axial Compression: Case 3
Solution:

Solving thee adjusted Euler critical buckling stress for LRFD

=
= = 2.267 MPa
Solving the adjusted modulus of elasticity;

= (15.4)(1.0)(1.0)(1.0)(1.0)(2.40)(0.90)(0.8)
= 26.611 MPa
= = 0.085
Example : Axial Compression: Case 3
Solution:

Solving the column stability factor for the LRFD method

-

0.083

Solving the allowable compression stress ;

=
= (26.611)(0.083)
= 2.209 MPa
Example : Axial Compression: Case 3
Solution:
Solving the LRFD - adjusted load capacity of the column 𝑃𝑟;
𝑃𝑟 =
= (2.209 MPa)(250 x 250)
= 138062.5 N
= 138.0625 kN

Solving the factored load 𝑃𝑢;

𝑃𝑢 = 1.2 (6 kN ) + 1.6 (10 kN)
= 23.2 kN < 𝑃𝑟 = 138.0625 kN Ok

Hence, use 300 x 300 mm (250 x 250 mm)
