listener to comprehend the intended meaning

Claim of fact asserts that a condition has existed,


exists, or will exist and are based on facts or data.
Question of fact includes What is true or false?,
What happened/didn’t happen?, How do we know
this?, and What exist/doesn’t exist.

Claim of Policy
Is a statement that indicates that an action must be
taken in specific policies.

Questions may include:


What should be done?, How can we solve this
problem?, What course of action should we pursue?,
and what should not be done?
Claim of Policy
 Is something that should or should not be done.

 The key word is the verb “should” which implies


that some action ought to be taken, but not that it
must or will be taken.
Example
• The use of plastic bags should be banned to reduce
environmental pollution

• Texting while driving should be an offense punishable


by jail time.

• We should respect everyone in school.


Claim of Value
A claim of value is based on preference such as
likes/dislikes (good or bad)

Questions may include:


Is it good or bad?, Is it right or wrong, How moral or
immoral?, Of what worth is it?, Who says so?, and is it
ethical or unethical?
Claim of Value
 Assert judgment whether it is good or bad, more or
less desirable.

 It is claiming whether something is good or bad or


the other thing is better than the other one.

• The Golden State Warrior is the best team in
NBA

• Gay marriage is immoral.
