Paper Mache Pulp Method

Paper mache originated in China during the Han dynasty and was used to make helmets. It later spread to countries like Japan, Persia, and Europe where it was used to make masks, furniture, and other decorative items. There are two main techniques for paper mache - the layering method and pulp method, both of which involve combining paper with an adhesive to form 3D shapes.

recommended to use for human
coffins because it so strong that it
was equally as durable as wood.

PAPIER-MÂCHÉ in the Philippines

Taka refers to papier-mâché made using

carved wooden sculpture used as a mold. The
craft originated in the town of Paete, Laguna in
the Philippines.[1]
PAPIER-MÂCHÉ in the Philippines
Taka was made by Paete local Maria Piday. During Christmas, Piday was in
charge of the church's decorations. The wooden angels and cherub was heavy
causing the carvings to fall. Piday devised the lightweight taka papier-mâché
as an alternative to the wooden sculptures. Piday was also a maker of local
toys such as the yoyo and the small acrobat hand puppet. Taka eventually
became folk art and was sold to nearby towns for festivals. In the 1970s, Tere
Afuang, a knowledgeable practitioner of the craft, popularized the craft.

PAPER MACHE TECHNIQUES
THERE ARE TWO PAPER
MACHE TECHNIQUES

1. THE PULP METHOD

a. Paper is blended with
binder to create a pulp.
Papier-mache pulp is essentially modeling clay
for papier-mache, and it is incredibly cheap,
easy, and quick to make. Use this recipe to
make a papier-mache pulp mixture using
newspaper and water.
Tools Materials and Equipment

Equipment / Tools Materials

• Large bowl • Newspaper
• Water (warm to hot)
• Large pot (optional)
• Salt
• Blender or food
• Glue
processor (optional)
• Airtight bag or bowl
FIRST STEP
Tear the newspaper into tiny pieces
and put them in a large bowl. Add just
enough warm to hot water to
completely cover the newspaper. Let it
soak for several hours or overnight.
SECOND STEP
Once the newspaper has soaked for several
hours, get your hands into it. Play with it, mix
it, and squeeze it through your fingers until it
looks and feels similar to oatmeal. Try to get
out as many lumps as possible. If necessary, add
a bit more water and let it soak a little longer
THIRD STEP
Once you have a smooth texture, add a
few tablespoons of salt to help secure the
mold. Mix it again with your hands. Once
mixed thoroughly, squeeze out any excess
water and add a few tablespoons of glue.
Now you are ready to use your papier-
mache pulp on your project
FOURTH STEP
•  Add flour and glue.
In a dry bowl, take your 6 cups of newspaper pulp and add 1 cup of flour,
about 2 Tbsp of salt (acts as a preservative) and 1/4 cup of white glue.  The
ratio of paper pulp to flour should be about 3:1.  Hand mix it all together like you
are kneading dough and feel the consistency, you don’t want it too sticky (more
flour needed) or too dry (use a little more glue or even a little water!).  Now your
paper mâché clay is done!  It should resemble a consistency of thick play-doh
(smooth and not clumpy).  TIP: I found working with a slightly wetter clay was
easier to smooth out cracks.
As I said before, I used about a 10″ diameter mixing bowl as the form for
the new paper mâché bowl.  I wrapped the bowl in plastic wrap (the adhesive
press n’ seal wrap worked nicely to stink to the surface of the bowl ) and then I
placed the upside down bowl on a baking tray that I had also lined with plastic
wrap so that as the bowl dried, it wouldn’t get stuck to the surface. Now build
away!  I pressed the paper mâché clay around the bowl, laying it on in about a
1/4″ thickness.   I then fashioned the base and the thick rim detail separately
and smoothed everything together.  The clay was very easy to manipulate and
I could quickly smooth out any cracks
