Cargo Sweat

Cargo sweat and ship sweat occur when warm, moist air comes into contact with cooler surfaces. Cargo sweat forms on cargo when the air dew point is higher than the cargo temperature. Ship sweat forms on the steel structure when warm, moist air condenses on cooler surfaces. To prevent sweat, the air dew point must remain below the temperature of the cargo and ship structure. Ventilation should be closed to avoid introducing moist air if the cargo is cooler than the outside air.

CARGO SWEAT

&
SHIP SWEAT .

K.K.Y.B.Kariyawasam.
Batch-31,Phase 1.
INTRODUCTION.
CARGO SWEAT,
• This forms when the cargo is at a lower temperature than the external air and
where the air is moist and is admitted to the cargo holds. If such warmer, moist air
is allowed to come into contact with the cargo the air is cooled and water droplets
from the air are deposited on the surface of the cargo.Cargo sweat will form when
the temperature of the cargo is less than the dew point of the air which surrounds
it.
SHIP’S SWEAT,
• A voyage from a warmer to cooler climate with cargo loaded warm and
meeting cooler air shouldn’t cause the formation of cargo sweat. However in
such circumstances there is the possibility of ship’s sweat.Ships sweat can
occur when warm moist air comes into contact with the cooler
steelwork.Ship’s sweat can form below the hold deck heads,on the
undersides of hatch covers and on the side plating of cargo holds.
DEW POINT & HUMIDITY

• Dew point is the temperature at which the air becomes saturated(100 precent
relative humidity). It is dependent on only the amount of moisture in the air.
• Humidity is the percent of saturation at a given temperature,it depends on
both moisture content and temperature.
HOW DO YOU FIND THE DEW POINT OF A
SHIP?

• On board ship the type of hygrometer used is the wet & dry bulb type.It
measures the wet bulb temperature and dry bulb temperature.Dew point of
the air is obtained by comparing the two temperatures on a dew point table.
TO AVOID POSSIBILITY OF CARGO SWEAT,

• All ventilators should be closed and no ventilation carried out. However, if

the moisture content of the cargo is high, extraction of the moist air from
within the cargo holds may be required.
TO MINIMIZE THE POSSIBILITY OF SHIP
SWEAT,

• Damage to cargo dunnage must be properly used to keep the cargo off the
tanktop and away from hold sides and structural members.Where appropriate
cargo should be covered with waterproof sheeting to protect it from sweat
dripping from above.
THE BASIC PRINCIPLE IS TO PREVENT SHIP
SWEAT AND CARGO SWEAT

• Keep the dew point of the air within the hold below the temperature of the
hold structure and the cargo to stop the formation of ship and cargo sweat.
