Mathematical modeling refers to representing real-world scenarios using mathematical concepts to make predictions and provide insights. Areas that commonly use models include climate modeling, aerospace science, manufacturing and design, population dynamics, medicine, war-related problems, and oceanography. Characteristics of effective mathematical models include realism, a hierarchy allowing for improvement, robustness to small parameter changes, appropriate complexity, and clarity on the problem and desired outcomes.

Few Characteristics of Mathematical Models
1. Realism of models - It is desired that a mathematical model to be as realistic as possible.

2. Hierarchy of models - Improvement of a model is a constant and continuous process.

3. Robustness of models - A model is said to be robust if small changes in the parameters

lead to small changes in the behavior of the model. Sensitivity analysis can
be used a tool to make a decision in this direction.
4. Complexity-The complexity of a model will increase if incorporate more
variables, parameters and realistic assumptions. However, increase in the
complexity not necessarily results in the improve insight of the problem in
hand.
5. Clarity-Before we start to formulate a model, we must be clear about
the problems and outcomes. As one need different mathematical models
to investigate the different dimensions of the same problem.
