Meaning of Accident

As a technical term 'accident' does not have a


clearly defined legal meaning.

 An accident is an unwanted event that is never


scheduled or planned.

 Accident is an unplanned, unexpected,


undesired, non-value added, interrupting
activity which may or may not result in personal
injury / property -damages

“Worker” means a person employed with or without


the knowledge of the principal employer & involved
in any manufacturing process.
Causes of Industrial Accident

 120 million industrial accident occur in the work


place world wide each year.

 210,000 of these accident result in fatality.

 High rate of accidents are happen in mining,


construction, transportation and agriculture
industries.

•88% accidents are caused by Unsafe Acts.
•10% accidents are caused by Unsafe Conditions.
•2% accidents are caused by Natural Calamity, which
is not under our control.
•An accident may not cause injury but an injury will
be caused only by an accident.
Meaning of Unsafe Action

 an unsafe action is someone who makes a change or


does something which then causes it to become
unsafe with the possible to cause injury.
Meaning of Unsafe Condition

An unsatisfactory physical condition existing in the


workplace environment immediately prior to an
accident event which is significant in initiating the
event. A hazard i.e. slippery floor, broken glass,
unguarded machine, trailing cable, low lighting levels
etc .
Unsafe Acts are -
Working without authority,
lack the necessary skills & Knowledge,
unfamiliar with the job process,
Working at improper speeds exceeding the
prescribed speed limits,
Improper lifting, handling, or moving of objects,
Improper placing and stacking of objects and
materials in dangerous locations,
Incorrect use of tools and equipment, hand tools,
power tools, and machinery,
Using defective equipment and tools to work,
Unsafe Acts are -

Ignoring to wear personal protective equipment


(PPE),
Removing safety guards from the workplace or
equipment ,
Smoking, creating naked flame or sparks in areas
where flammable materials are stored,
taking shortcuts for tasks ,

Working with lack of concentration,


Working in poor physical conditions,
Wearing unsafe clothing,
Taking an unsafe position,

that is likely to cause property damage or injury.
