VOCABULARY SKILLS

Enriching one’s vocabulary is not as simple as


counting one, two, three. It is not only matter of
memorizing newly encountered words.
Nor it is only consulting a dictionary for
word meaning. The quest for an enriched
vocabulary takes time and patient reading.
A person can increase his or her vocabulary by
getting the meaning of “unknown” word
through context clues.
Context Clues
Are the parts of written or spoken
statement that follow a specific word or
passage, usually influencing its meaning
or effect.
Once these clues are spotted, the
meaning of a word can easily be
unlocked.
Context Method
 isa way of enhancing one’s
vocabulary skills.
This approach of using the words that
describe another word within a statement
is called context method of getting word
meaning.
Kinds of Context Clues
1. Direct explaination or definition
Ex. He had no feeling of malice, no hatred in his
heart.

2. Clues from contrast, with or without signal


words
Ex. Usually you knew what to expect from Betty,
but sometimes, she was unpredictable.
3. Clues from action that is performed
Ex. The victim of the accident hoped the
medication would alleviated his suffering.

4. Clues from another sentence


Ex. The committee complained bitterly about the
high taxes. The major agreed that the taxes
seemed exorbitant.
5. Clues from your experience or general
information
Ex. When Johnny disturbed the class, the
teacher had to chastise him.

6. Clues provided by examples


For example, hypochondriac is explained by
the many unnecessary complaints a person
makes about illness.
7. Clues to synonyms for overworked words
Ex. He kept insisting stubbornly, “ Just the same,
you lied to me”
(insisting instead of saying)
Ex. The president has to deal with innumerable problems
affecting country.
