Meaning of Educational

Management
Management is the process of planning, organizing,
directing, controlling and evaluating to accomplish
predetermined objectives of an institution through
coordinated use of human and material resources.

 Management is the Art/Science of:


 Getting work done.
 With the help of other people
 Within the given budget
 Within the given deadlines
1. Planning: is the process of setting objectives and determining
the actions in order to achieve them. Planning is anticipatory in
nature and sets priorities. It is proactive rather than passive.

2. Organizing: is the process of combining the work which


individuals or groups have to perform with facilities
necessary for its execution such that the duties performed
provide the best channels for efficient, systematic, positive
and co-ordinated application of available effort.
3. Directing: is the art or process of influencing people such that
they willingly strive to achieve group goals. It focuses on the
development of willingness to work with zeal and confidence,
provides adequate guidelines to complete the task, and motivates
individuals to achieve goals in a coordinated manner. It also
focuses on exercising leadership while determining
responsibility and accountability.
4.Controlling: involves measuring and monitoring performance in
accordance with plans and taking corrective action when required.
It establishes performance standards based on the objectives,
measures and reports actual performance compares the two and
takes corrective or preventive action as necessary.

5. Evaluating: is the process of measuring and assessing the


achievement of objectives while providing an insight into strengths
and weaknesses and planning for future endeavours.
Management as an academic discipline refers to,
“substantive body of knowledge concepts, theories,
laws and applications in practice.

Henry Fayol: To manage is to “forecast and plan, to


organize, to command, to coordinate and to control”
Donald J Clough: Management is the heart and
science of decision making and leadership.
Education is the provision of a series of learning
experiences to students in order to impact knowledge,
values, attitudes and skills with the ultimate aim of
making them productive members of society.
Educational Management

 is “The process of planning, organizing,


directing and controlling the activities of an
institution by utilizing human and material
resources so as to effectively and efficiently
accomplish functions of teaching, extension
work and research.”
Need of educational management:

 Policy at the national level focuses on social,


economic and cultural development. The best
means to achieve the development in these sphere
is through human resource development and
Education. There have been tremendous advance
in the field of technology-this is made available to
society only through education.
The field of education is expected to provide society
with human resources which have specialized
knowledge, attitudes, work ethics, social, moral &
political values and skills so as to sustain and enhance
the expected development of the nation.

Thus,
1. Educational management has to make its curriculum more relevant
to life and needs of changing society in an effective and efficient
manner.
2. Education therefore has to be dynamic, so that it can contribute
towards accomplishments of national development goals.
3. Education must also enable students to bring about desirable social
change and the same time preserve desirable and positive aspects
of existing culture.
In order to fulfill the above stated role of education, keeping in mind “NATIONAL
DEVELOPMENTAL GOALS” effectively and efficiently, there is a need to manage
education professionally and move beyond the traditional role of academics and
values only.

Thus the knowledge of:


1. Educational management theories, principles, concepts, techniques,
skills and strategies, when applied to education will bring about
effective and efficient functioning of educational institutions.
2. Scientific and systematic management of educational institutions is
necessary to bring about qualitative changes in the educational
system.
3. Knowledge of educational management is also required so that we
can use our scarce and dwindling
