CORROSION
Corrosion is when a refined metal is naturally converted to a more stable form such as its oxide,
hydroxide or sulphide state this leads to deterioration of the material.

TYPES OF CORROSION
1.  Pitting corrosion is a localized form
of corrosion by which cavities or
"holes" are produced in the material.

 Pitting is considered to be more dangerous than

uniform corrosion damage because it is more difficult
to detect, predict and design against.
Pitting Corrosion
2.  Crevice Corrosion refers to the localized
attack on a metal surface at, or
immediately adjacent to, the gap or
crevice between two joining surfaces.
 The gap or crevice can be formed
between two metals or a metal and non-
metallic material.

Crevice Corrosion
3.
 Inter granular corrosion (IGC), also known
as inter granular attack (IGA), is a form
of corrosion where the boundaries of
crystallites of the material are more
susceptible to corrosion than their insides.
 The attack usually progresses along a narrow
path along the grain boundary and, in a
severe case of grain-boundary corrosion,
entire grains may be dislodged due to Inter granular Corrosion
complete deterioration of their boundaries.

 VCI is also known as volatising corrosion inhibitor.

 VCI is a group of organic chemicals, a mixture of contact and vapour

phase corrosion inhibitors.

 VCI Masterbatch can be blended with many polyethylene resins (LDPE/

LLDPE/ HDPE ) to produce a range of anti-corrosion packaging systems
like Blown Film / Molding / Stretch film.

 When VCI Masterbatch is used to manufacture the finished product, it

offers corrosion protection by releasing vapours which form a
monomolecular protective layer on the surface of metal to be protected.

 The VCI MBs’ works on the chemisorption process which in result protect
the metals from corrosion, which is described below.
CORROSION IN FERROUS & NON-FERROUS METALS
 Ferrous metals have a high carbon content which
generally makes them prone to rust when exposed to
moisture.

 These extracted metals have a tendency to react with

their environment and form corresponding metal
oxides.

 This process of formation of metal oxides leads to

deterioration or corrosion.

 The most important non-ferrous metals happen to be

oxides or sulphides.
RUST
 One of the more common groups of non-ferrous
materials is copper-based alloys such as bronze and
brass.

 In some non-ferrous metals are quite vulnerable to

corrosion .
WORKING MECHANISM OF VCI MB

 VCI film is used to pack metal component.

 VCI molecule displaces moisture.
 Then chemisorption takes place.
 Chemisorption- The active vapors neutralize the
surface acids and forms a mono-molecular
protective layer on the packed metal surface and
offer corrosion resistance.
 This mono-molecular protective layer stops
oxygen, water & other pollutants to reach metal
surface.
 Prevents the corrosion of metal .

MASTERBATCHES OFFERED
JJ PLASTALLOY PVT. LTD. Provides a range of masterbatches for different purpose.
Different grades are available as per the application. The grades offered for this special
purpose are
SIVA VCI 1001 PE MB
SIVA VCI 1002 PE MB
SIVA VCI 1003 PE MB

PROCESSING TIPS
 Ensure that material doesn’t stick to the wall of the hopper because stickiness of the
MB.
 Temperature at the throat of the extruder to be maintained at room temperature. So
that MB doesn’t start melting at the throat.
 Temperature of all barrel zones may be increased by 10-15oc to get the better
dispersion & distribution of VCI MB.
 Main screw rpm of the extruder may have to be reduced by 10-15% to get better
mixing of VCI MB with the base polymer.
 VCI MB is to be untouched & use gloves at the time of feeding into hopper.
GRADE
The masterbatch offered having high value, renewable, excellent technical performance based on
polyethylene resin is SIVA VCI 1001 PE MB.

DESCRIPTION
 SIVA VCI 1001 PE MB contains weak acid salts of aromatic primary amines.
 This MB generally recommended for ferrous materials.
 The masterbatch products acts by releasing VCI vapours at ambient temperatures which
neutralizes acids present on metal surface to prevent corrosion of the components.

CHARACTERISTICS
 Effective prevention of corrosion of packed components.
 It eliminates the use of additional oils, greases & desiccants.
 Excellent compatibility with carrier resins.
 No adverse ecological footprints.
 Good heat stability and outstanding processing.
 Easy processing without affecting the mechanical properties of the end products.
