Oxidation Reduction

Oxidation is defined as the loss of electrons or an increase in oxidation number. Reduction is defined as the gain of electrons or a decrease in oxidation number. Oxidizing agents cause oxidation, while reducing agents cause reduction. To determine if oxidation or reduction occurred, one assigns oxidation numbers and looks for changes - an increase indicates oxidation, while a decrease indicates reduction.

OXIDATION-REDUCTION REACTIONS

OXIDATION
 Is a loss of electron

The sodium atom loses this one electron, it

forms a sodium ion with +1 charge. This loss
of electron is defined as oxidation. There, the
sodium was oxidized.
 An increase in oxidation number

An uncombined element has an

oxidation number of zero. The oxidation
number of sodium in sodium chloride
(NaCl) is +1, and that of Chlorine is -1.

The sodium has changed in oxidation number from zero to +1, a gain.
The sodium atom was oxidized.
 A gain of oxygen

 A loss of hydrogen
REDUCTION
 A decrease in oxidation number
 A gain of electron

 A loss of oxygen

 A gain of hydrogen
Oxidizing Agents and reducing Agents

Reducing Agent- substance that causes

the reduction of an element or
compound
-whatever is oxidized is the
reducing agent
Oxidizing Agents and reducing Agents

Oxidizing Agent- substance that causes

the oxidation of some element o

oxidizing agent
Steps

1. Assign oxidation numbers for each

element.

2. Look for changes in the oxidation

numbers

H remained at +1.
C changed from -2 to +4. Since the
oxidation number increased, the C in C3H6
was oxidized and acts as the reducing
agent.
O changed from O to -2. Since the
oxidation number decreased.
O2 was reduced and acts as the oxidizing
agent.
