CONJUNCTIONS
• We use words called conjunctions like: and, or, but, so,
because and although or even though, to join two parts of a
sentence. Conjunctions can be used to give:
- more information (and),
- alternatives (or),
- reasons (because),
- results (so)
- unexpected information (but, although or even though)

- Amy's dad is taking us on Saturday morning, and he's joining clauses
offered to bring us home again on Sunday.
- It’s cold but sunny in Vancouver today. shows an opposite or contrast
- It’s cold in Boston, but it’s warm in Miami. joins words and sentences
- She’d like to go, but she can’t. unexpected or different information
- Do you want chocolate, strawberry or vanilla? gives a choice
- It’s very hot! I can’t eat or sleep. joins words and sentences
- It’s raining, so we’re not having a picninc in the park. gives a result, joins sentences.
- We need to arrive early so (that) we can get a good place. (the second clause shows the purpose of
the first clause; that is optional)
- I'd like to see that Irish band, because Celtic music is the second clause explains the
pretty cool. reason Alfie wants to see the Irish band.
