GPON (Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Networks)
• Three advantages:
1. Longer transmission distance: Transmission over optical fibers reaches the maximum of 20 km transmission distan
ce.
2. Higher bandwidth: downstream 2.5 Gbit/s and upstream 1.25 Gbit/s (the PMD layer) for each subscriber
3. Optical split feature: The single optical fiber from the CO is split to multiple drop optical fibers to save the resourc
es.

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 15

GPON Technology----Data Multiplexing

 The GPON system uses the WDM technology to implement the bi-directional transm
ission over a single fiber (a forced transmission mode).
1490 nm

1310 nm

 Over a single optical fiber, to separate the Tx and Rx signals of multiple subscribers,
the GPON system uses the following two multiplexing technologies:
 The downstream data streams use the broadcast technology.
 The upstream data streams use the TDMA technology.

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 16

GPON Technology----Downstream Data

 Broadcast mode: The length of any downstream GPON frame is fixed to 125 us and the fra
mes are broad cast to all the ONUs. In this way, all the ONUs can receive the same data. Th
e ONUs differentiate the frames by Gemport ID and filters the frames to receive its own dat
a.
AES ( Advanced Encryption Standard )

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 17

GPON Technology----Upstream Data

 TDMA mode: The upstream GPON data is transmitted in the TDMA mode. The uplink is d
ivided into different time slots, which are allocated to each ONU according to the upstream
bandwidth map field in the downstream frames. Hence, all ONUs can transmit their own da
ta based on a specific sequence and no conflict for competing timeslots occurs.

Protection Mode of a GPON Network
 Both the OLT and ONT provide two
GPON ports and the two GPON ports
of the OLT work in the 1:1 mode.

 OLT and the ONU and all faults can
be located.
 When the active PON port or the
IFpon subscriber line of the ONU fails, the
IFpon ONU automatically switches the
service to the standby PON pot. Then
the service is transmitted in the
upstream direction through the standby
2: N optical splitter ONU#N line and the standby PON port of the
IFpon OLT. In this mode, the service is not
IFpon interrupted.
Type C Full-backup mode  Difficult implementation and high cost
 One port of them is always in the idle
state, which causes low bandwidth
usage.

Key GPON Technology- Ranging
 OLT uses the ranging procedure to obtain the round trip delay (RTD) of the ONU and then to
specify a proper equalization delay (EqD) to ensure that the data transmitted by each ONU
does not conflict on the optical splitter.
 During ranging process, a quiet zone is required. In this case, the upstream transmit channels
of other ONUs are suspended. OLT opens a ranging window (quiet zone) by setting BWmap

Key GPON Technology-DBA

 What is DBA ?

 -- DBA, dynamically bandwidth assignment

 -- DBA is a mechanism in which the dynamic allocation of upstream bandwidth can

be implemented in several microseconds or milliseconds.

 Why DBA is required ?

 - DBA increases the upstream bandwidth usage of a PON port.

 - DBA increases the number of subscribers connected to a PON port.

 - With DBA, subscribers can enjoy services with higher bandwidths, especially the
services whose required bandwidth changes greatly.

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 35

Advantages of DBA in Bandwidth
Utilization and Average Delay
Increasing the maximum bandwidth
utilization
Without DBA: 40%.
With DBA: 80%.

Reducing the average delay

Without DBA: 100 ms

With DBA: < 10 ms

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 36

DBA Report Type
 Three DBA reporting mechanisms for the GPON status:

 PLOu-State Ind DBA (Status indication)

 DBRu-Piggy-back DBA (Used by Huawei)

 Payload DBA (Complete ONU reporting)

 The internal DBA module of the OLT continuously collects the DBA reports, performs related calculations, and
delivers the calculation results to each ONU in the format of BW Map.
 According to the BW Map, each ONU transmits the upstream burst data in its own timeslot to use the upstream
bandwidth.

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 38

Two Modes for Implementing DBA
 SR (Status Reporting ) - DBA

D/S Direction ONT The OLT delivers BW Map in the

on the results that are got in the last
calculation.
U/S Direction
② Data Report
 According to the allocated
bandwidth, the ONU transmits the
data status report waiting to be
transmitted in the current T-CONT.

 After receiving the status report
from the ONU, the OLT performs
the DBA calculation, update the BW
Map, and delivers the BW Map in
the next frame.

④  The ONU transmits data in the

specified timeslot after receiving the
delivered BW Map message.

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 39

NSR-DBA Implementation
 Non Status Reporting (NSR) - DBA

It refers to the algorithm in which the cell streams from the NSR-ONU/ONT are monitored on the OLT.

Procedure:
Step1: Check the number of the cells received by the OLT at the specified interval.
Step2: Calculate the utilization rate based on the real time monitoring results that is obtained in
Step1.
Step3: Compare the utilization rate with the threshold to recognize the congestion level.

T-CONT Bandwidth Terms
 Transmission containers (T-CONTs): Dynamically receives the authorization delive
red by the OLT to manage the upstream bandwidth allocation of the PON system
TC layer. This improves the upstream bandwidth of the PON system.
 T-CONT bandwidth types: FB, AB, NAB, and BE
 Five T-CONT types: Type1, Type2, Type3, Type4, and Type5

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD. HUAWEI Confidential Page 41

Relations Between T-CONT Types and Bandwidth Types

 Based on the service priority, the system sets an SLA for each ONU to limit the bandwidth
of the service.
 The maximum and minimum bandwidth restricts the bandwidth of each ONU to ensure that
the bandwidth varies according to the priority. In general, the voice service is of the highest
priority, and the data service is of the lowest priority.
 The OLT allocates bandwidth according to the service, SLA, and actual ONU conditions. T
he service with a high priority can be allocated high bandwidth to meet the requirements.

 GPON supports the AES128 encryption of downstream broadcast data. AES ( Advanced Encryption Standard )
 Only the payload in the GEM frames can be encrypted.
 The GPON system periodically changes and updates the AES key to improve the reliability of line data.
 The OLT initiates the request for changing the AES key, The ONU responds to the request and generates a new
key, and sends the new key to the OLT. The AES key is divided into two parts for transmission and is transmitt
ed three times. The OLT switches to the new key after receiving the key, After that, the OLT uses the account
of the new key to notify the ONU three times by a corresponding command, and the ONU switches the check k

Optical Fiber Attenuation and Optical Power
The optical fiber attenuation varies according to the lengths of

optical fibers.
About 0.35 dB per km
