Math 8 - Lesson 10

The document is a mathematics lesson on inequalities. It introduces inequalities and key vocabulary like region, minimum, maximum and cargo. It includes two example problems, one about the maximum cargo a truck can carry within a bridge's weight limit, and another about the amounts of two types of nails that can be bought within a budget. The lesson aims to help students understand where and why inequalities are used.

Lesson Objective:

The purpose of the lesson is to

understand where and for
what purpose inequalities are
used.
VOCABULARY CHECK 

INEQUALITY
INEQUALITY compares two values,
showing if one is less than, greater than
or simply not equal to another value.
VOCABULARY CHECK 

REGION
REGION is a space in the number plane
that either is separated by lines or is
surrounded by lines.
VOCABULARY CHECK 

MINIMUM MAXIMUM
Minimum is the Maximum is the
smallest value. greatest value.
VOCABULARY CHECK 

CARGO
Cargo is the goods carried by a ship,
aircraft, or other large vehicle.
LESSON
Activity
Problem No. 1
An 18-wheel truck stops at a weigh station
before passing over a bridge. The weight
limit on the bridge is 25 000 kg The cab in
front of the truck weighs 550 kg and the
trailer at the back of the truck weighs
700 kg when empty.
1.In kilogram, how much cargo can the truck
carry on the trailer and still be allowed to cross
the bridge?
Given:
Cab weighs 550 kg
Trailer weighs 700 kg
Solution:
2.The mass of a sedan car is 1365 kg. How many
cars can be loaded onto the truck and still cross the
bridge?

Given:
25 000 kg- bridge capacity
1 250kg- mass of the truck
Solution:
3. The truck is required to carry some grain in silos. 20 silos can fit
onto the back of the truck. Each silos has a mass of 150kg. and has
a capacity of 500 liters. A liter of grain has a mass of 2.5kg. If each
silo is full, can the truck cross the bridge?

Given:
150 kg- mass of each Silos
500 liters- capacity of each Silos
2.5 kg- mass of a liter of grain
Solution:
Mass of 1 Silo Mass of 20 Silos

This is too heavy. He can only carry 16 full Silos.

Problem No. 2
A carpenter wants to buy two types of
nails, the first type cost $6 per kilogram,
and the second type cost $9 per
kilogram. He needs at least 5kg of the
first type and at least 3 kg of the second
type. He can only spend less than $75.
1. Using x to represent the amount of the first type
and y to represent the second type, state the system
of inequalities that represents this situation.
6 𝑥 + 9 𝑦 <75
2. Graph these inequalities on a number plane.
3. Shade the area that represents the region of the
solution to the number of nails he can buy.
Reflection

mathematical concepts addressed in
this lesson?
2. Would you rate your level od
understanding of the material
covered in this lesson high,
moderate, or low?
