A composition has three parts:

1. Opening (Here you write your topic. The first sentence is called topic
sentence because it gives you the general idea about the content or topic of
the paragraph.

2. Body (These sentences give supporting ideas and details about the topic)

3. conclusion.- (closing , summarizing ideas. This part can be similar to the


opening)

Steps for writing a composition or paragraph.-
1. Plan (brainstorm ideas).

2. Organize– a. opening (topic you will write about)


b. body (include details, examples)
c. conclusion.
3. Start writing (check tenses, use connectors *)

4. Check and make corrections.- Title? Opening? Conclusion? Tenses,


punctuation and capitalization.
*Use connectors when writing a composition or essay.-

II. Body: First, Second, Then= Later= after that, when, because, and, but, or, so ( for
this reason)
Although (Aunque )- even though ( aún cuando)

In English every verb needs an explicit subject . For example: How do
you say “Es importante.” =Is important or IT is important ?
We use IT is + adjective + TO+ verb base : It is necessary to call , it is better
to go.
 Read the paragraph (composition) and :
 1. Underline the opening (topic sentence) 2. Circle one or two supporting ideas.
 3. Underline five connectors 4. Underline conclusive sentence(s).

 My Best Vacation
 My best vacation was when I went to Mexico City with my family 3 years ago. We went by car and
enjoyed the beautiful view from here to Mexico City. For instance, we saw the beautiful pineapple fields in
Veracruz and the famous Popocatepetl Volcano. We took a city tour. I never imagined that the city centre had
such incredible buildings. First, we sightsaw the Post Office building, Bellas Artes, etc. Then, we went to
Chapultepec . We visited the Castle, where our Mexican heroes died. After that, we went to Six Flags. I was
very pleased to see all the different things you can do there. For example, we got on the roller coaster and it
was an awesome experience! I think I have become a fan of mechanical rides now. I loved going to Mexico
City with my family. We had fun together.

 The opening, body, and closing can all be in one paragraph, or they can be spread over many
paragraphs.
 When there is a major change of idea start a new paragraph. For example: Write about advantages
and disadvantages of something.

 Two ways to separate paragraphs:

 INDENTATION (SANGRIA) or b) SEPARATING PARAGRAPHS BY SPACE

 ASSIGNMENT: TITLE: ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SMARTPHONES.


 The smartphone invention is one of the biggest achievements in the world of technology. This is because
unlike standard phones, with a smartphone one has a variety of options. Although a smartphone has great
ADVANTAGES, there are a number of setbacks (DISADVANTAGES)as well.
 (+) 
 On one hand, smartphones have many good things. One benefit is that in addition to making calls you can
send text messages for free. For example, if you are living in another city, you don´t have to make a call to be i
contact with friends, etc. Another advantage is that you can access the internet. For instance, you can check
your e mails even if you are not in the office.
 (-) 
 On the other hand, smartphones also have a number of disadvantages. They are 66% more expensive than a
normal phone. You can also get distracted very easily. For example, when you are in class or with the family.
  
 To sum up, a smartphone is really useful to communicate faster and more effectively, but it is necessary to
control its use, so you can get the benefits, and not become addicted .
