Substation

The document provides information about the 132 kV GSS Mahaveer Nagar substation in Kota, Rajasthan. [1] It discusses the key equipment used at the substation including power transformers, instrument transformers, lightning arresters, isolators, circuit breakers, and relays. [2] The substation receives incoming 132 kV supply from two other substations and steps it down to 33 kV and 11 kV for distribution. [3] It provides a single line diagram and layout showing the arrangement of major equipment.

SUBSTATION
• An assembly of apparatus used to change some characteristics of
electric supply.
• Generally transform voltage from high to low ar vice versa.
• Between the generating station and consumer, different substations
operate at different levels.
GSS MAHAVEER NAGAR KOTA
• Established on 13 march, 1994.
• Total capacity of the GSS is around 100 MVA.
• The incoming 132 kV supply is stepped down to 33kV and 11kV.
• Incoming feeder fed 132kV supply from GSS Sakatpura and GSS
Ranpur.
INCOMING FEEDERS: OUTGOING FEEDRES:

• 220/132kV Sakatpura Kota • 33 KV TALWANDI

• 220/132kV Ranpur Kota • 33 KV BASANT VIHAR
• 33 KV DADABARI
• 33 KV RIMDC
• 33 KV RANPUR
• 33 KV PHED
• 33 KV INDRA VIHAR
• 132 KV R.K. PURAM
• 11 KV RANGBARI
• 11 KV MEDICAL COLLEGE
• 11 KV BALAJI NAGAR
POWER TRANSFORMER
• Static device to transform electrical energy.
• Transformer used in substations are of high ratings.
• Used in transmission and distribution system for step up or step down
the AC voltage.
• Two tranformers are assembled in GSS mahaveer nagar for step down
the voltage.
• Ratings of power transformer:
133/33kV star connected 40/50MVA
COOLING FOR POWER TRANSFORMER
• Usually two types of cooling is
available:
i. Oil coooling - a conservating
tank is mounted at the top of
transformer.
ii. Air Cooling - Fans are mounted
for at both side of transformer.

At faulty condition the

explosion vent are used to
release the oil pressure.
INSTRUMENT TRANSFORMER
• Combination of measuring instrument and step down transformer.
• Used to measure electrical quantities such as voltage, current, power
factor etc.
• Extend the range of measuremet.
• Two types of instrument transformer:
i. Current Transformer (CT)
ii. Potential Transformer(PT)
CURRENT TRANSFORMER
• Step down the current for
mesurement purpose.
• Used for current limiting to
control, protect and operate
relays.
• Large number of secondary
turns and few number of
primary turns
POTENTIAL TRANSFORMER
• They are step down
transformers.
• Measures high alternating
voltage.
• CVT:
• capacitor divider with it associated
electromagnetic unit.
• The divider provides an accurate
proportioned voltage, while the
magnetic unit transform the
voltage.
LIGHTNING ARRESTER
• Protect from high voltage surges.
• Diverts the abnormal high
voltage to the ground without
affecting the continuity of
supply.
• Connected between phase and
ground terminal.
WAVE TRAP
• Used to block communication
signals.
• It act as filtering cum protective
device.
• Allows only 50Hz signals to pass
through it.
BUSBAR
• Solid metal bars which carry
current.
• Consist the number of lines
connected to it which have same
voltage and frequency,
• Genrally made up of copper or
aluminium.
• Two type of bus bar:
• Main Bus
• Auxillary Bus
BUS COUPLER
• Used to couple one bus to other
without any interruption in
power supply
• In case of overload, it transfer
load between buses.
INSULATOR
• Materials which do not allow
flow of electricity through them.
• Give support to the overhead
line conductors and prevent the
current flow towards earth.
• Post, shackel and suspension
type insulator are used in 132kV
substation.
ISOLATORS
• Manually operated mechanical
switches.
• Isolate the faulty section of
substation.
• Operated at off load condition
only.
• Also called as disconnector or
disconnecting switch.
CIRCUIT BREAKER
• Electric switch used for protecting the equipments from the damage
caused by overcurrent, overvoltage or short circuit.
• Interrupt current flow after realay detects a fault.
• Operate in on load conditions.
• Two types of circuit breaker are used in GSS mahaveer Nagar:
1. Vaccum Circuit Breaker
2. SF6 Circuit Breaker

strength.
RELAYS
• Sensing gadgets used for sensing
fault in substation.
• Used to trigger CBs and other
swtches in substation.
• It senses abnormal conditions
and give an alarm.
• Two types of relay are used:
1. Electromagnetic relay
2. Dgital relay

BATTERIES
• Battery bank is available for supplying power to relay system, control
circuitry and som other operations which requires dc supply.
• 55 batteries each of 2 volts are available here.
