Manufacturing Sector Scenario In India
• India’s manufacturing sector has evolved through several phases – from initial
industrialisation and licence raj to liberalisation and the current global
competitiveness.
• In 2017, the manufacturing sector contributed only about 16% of India’s GDP.
• However, the total manufacturing employment has reduced significantly between
2011 and 2016 by 10 million in just four years, especially in the labour-intensive
manufacturing sectors like food processing, tobacco, textiles, apparel, leather, wood
and furniture.
• The growth rate in the manufacturing sector over the last decade has been around 7-9% per
annum.
