This document provides an overview of compressed air engines. It discusses the history of using compressed air in locomotives and trains in the 19th century. It describes how a compressed air engine works by using compressed air that enters the cylinder and pushes the piston downward, converting the compressed air energy into mechanical work. The document outlines some advantages, such as not requiring gasoline or other fuels, and reducing costs. However, it also notes disadvantages like limited refueling time and storage capacity. It concludes that compressed air technology could be a viable alternative fuel option.

AIR COMPRESSED ENGINE IN INDIA ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES CONCLUSION REFERENCES INTRODUCTION Nowadays, automobiles consume a large number of fossil fuels. However, the consumption of fossil fuels has brought many serious environmental problems, such as global warming, ozone layer depletion and fine particulate matter. To avoid such environmental problems, renewable energy has been applied to automobiles. A compressed air engine of a renewable energy vehicle is introduced. WHAT IS AN ENGINE An engine is a device which transform one form of energy into another form.
Heat engines, including internal combustion engines
and external combustion engines (such as steam engines) burn a fuel to create heat, which then creates motion. HISTORY OF COMPRESSED AIR ENGINE Compressed air has been used since the 19th century to locomotives and trains.
Dennis Papin apparently came up with the idea of
using compressed air (Royal Society London, 1687).
In 1872 the Mekarski air engine was used for street
transit, consisting of a single stage engine. Mekarski Compressed Air Tram COMPRESSED AIR EGINE A compressed air engine is a type of motor which does mechanical work by expanding compressed air.
A compressed air engine generally convert the compressed air
energy to mechanical work through either linear or rotary motion.
Linear motion can come from either a diaphragm or piston
actuator, while rotary motion is supplied by either a vane type air motor or piston air motor. WORKING AND PRINCILE compressed air enters the cylinder via the intake valve because of the pressure difference, drives the piston downward. Then the intake valve closes when the crank reaches a certain angle. While the compressed air continues to push the piston down and output mechanical work. When the movement of piston is close to the bottom dead center (BDC) the exhaust valve opens, so that the compressed air with residual pressure is expelled by the impetus of the piston. After the piston moves back to the top center (TDC), the CAE completes a work cycle. 1- INTAKE PORT 2- EXHAUST PORT 3- CYLINDER 4- PISTON 5- CONECTING ROD 6- CRANK SHAFT 3D-Diagram of an Engine that operated by compressed air Valve timing diagram AIR COMPRESSED ENGINE IN INDIA Tata Motors has signed an agreement with Motor Development International of France to develop a car that runs on compressed air, thus making it very economical to run and almost totally pollution free. Although there is no official word on when the car will be commercially manufactured for India. MiniCAT Compressed air car for India ADVANTAGES It uses no gasoline or other bio-carbon based fuel.
Compressed air engines reduce the cost of vehicle
production, because there is no need to build a cooling system, spark plugs.
Reduction or elimination of hazardous chemicals such as
gasoline.
The engine runs on cold or warm air, so can be made of
lower strength light weight material. DISADVANTAGES Refueling takes 3-4 hours Limited capacity of storage tanks. Limited speed range (110-140 Km). When air expands in the engine it cools dramatically
and must be heated to ambient temperature.
Since this engine is not yet common it cannot be
refilled at home but needs a compressor. CONCLUSION Nowadays the need for energy continuously increases, and we are using the conventional resources at an alarming rate hence an alternative fuel is much required and Compressed Air Technology can be one of the best alternative, as the pollution caused is zero and it is also cost efficient.
