Electro-Static Discharge (ESD)

Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) can occur when a static electric charge builds up and transfers between objects, potentially damaging electronic components. ESD damage is cumulative and irreversible. Poor handling is the main cause of ESD failures. Key precautions include using protective packaging, handling components only in ESD protected areas, wearing wrist straps connected to anti-static mats, and following other procedures to control static electricity. Taking anti-static precautions can help avoid system failures and downtime.

Electro-Static Discharge (ESD)

What is Electro Static Discharge?

•The sudden transfer of electrical charge

between objects at different electrostatic
potentials

•Charge can develop in the human body by

friction from materials. The common example
is walking across a carpet, but coveralls or
overalls can also ‘charge’ our bodies to a
potential of over 30000 Volts.

•ESD damage is cumulative and irreversible

•Damage may not be ‘catastrophic’ giving total

failure, it may be ‘Latent’ meaning partial
damage that could fail while in operation
Procedures and Precautions Overview
•Poor Handling is the main cause of ESD failure

•Components must be kept in protective packaging

•Components must only be handled in an ESD protected area

•Wrist straps are the most important feature in an ESD area by

connecting the technician and work area to the same voltage
potential

•Anti-Static Mats and floor tiling should ideally be utilised in an ESD

area

•ESD damage can occur through all stages of production, but most
often through repair and maintenance when precautions are not
followed
ESD Precautions
Never wear a wrist strap when working on Power
Supply Units, Monitors or other exposed high voltages

• Use a Anti-Static wrist strap connected to a Anti-Static mat via a

‘snap connector’
A Ground Mat
Handling With Bare Hands
ESD Strategy and Implementation
•Management Commitment – Lead and encourage
support from all staff

•Control of supplies and stores – correct

packaging and storage

•Workshop designated ESD areas with wrist

straps and mats and the use of correct footwear

•Signs and notices, clearly defining the ESD area

•Training

•Regular monitoring and updating of ESD

guidelines
Why take Anti-Static Precautions?

• Just a few moments of careful ESD Anti-Static handling could

avoid hours of system ‘down-time’ should the ROV fail at depth

• Careful and methodical system maintenance is the key to system

reliability and client confidence
