Lo 1 - 2

Data is generated from a variety of sources, including user interactions, sensors and IoT devices, transactions, surveys, research, social media, monitoring systems, and external data sources. Tools are used to manipulate the data to make it meaningful for business processes. These tools include database management system (DBMS) software to store and manipulate the data, and data analytics software to extract, analyze, and provide insights from the data. Common examples of each type of software were listed.

LO 1

• How data is generated.

• Tools used to manipulate the data to form them meaningful to support

the business process.
How data is generated
• User Interactions: Data is generated when users interact with systems, applications,
websites, or devices. This includes actions such as browsing webpages, submitting forms,
making purchases, posting on social media, or using mobile apps. These interactions
generate data points that capture user behavior, preferences, and actions.
• Sensors and IoT Devices: Data is generated by sensors and Internet of Things (IoT)
devices. Sensors embedded in various systems, machinery, or objects capture and transmit
data about environmental conditions, physical movements, temperature, pressure,
location, or other parameters. IoT devices, such as smart home devices or wearables,
generate data through their interactions with users and the surrounding environment.
• Transactions and Operations: Data is generated through business transactions and
operational processes. This includes sales transactions, financial transactions, inventory
movements, supply chain activities, production processes, or customer interactions. These
activities generate data that reflects the operational aspects of an organization.
How data is generated cont.
• Surveys and Feedback: Data is generated through surveys, questionnaires, feedback
forms, or customer feedback mechanisms. Organizations collect data by soliciting
input from customers, employees, or stakeholders. This data provides insights into
opinions, preferences, satisfaction levels, or suggestions for improvement.
• Research and Experiments: Data is generated through research studies, experiments,
or scientific investigations. Researchers collect and analyze data to test hypotheses,
gather evidence, or derive insights in various fields such as science, healthcare, social
sciences, or marketing.
• Social Media and Online Platforms: Data is generated through social media
interactions, online platform activities, or digital content creation. Users generate data
when they post, share, comment, like, or engage with content on social media
platforms, blogs, forums, or online communities. This data captures social
interactions, trends, sentiment, or user-generated content.
How data is generated cont.
• Monitoring and Logging: Data is generated through monitoring systems, logging
mechanisms, or event tracking. Organizations collect data by monitoring network
traffic, system performance, user activities, or security events. These data points
provide information about system health, security incidents, or operational
metrics.

• External Data Sources: Data is generated from external sources such as public
records, government databases, third-party data providers, or data exchanges.
Organizations can access and integrate external data into their systems, enriching
their datasets and gaining additional insights.
Tools used to manipulate the data to form them meaningful to support the business
process.

Those tools are mainly divided into 2 categories:

• DBMS Software: used to store and manipulate (delete, update and view)
the data.

• Data Analytics Software: used to extract the data from different data
sources, analyze those data and provide insights of those data as the results
of the analysis such as hidden relationships, hidden patterns and hidden
trends.
Examples for DBMS Software
• Oracle Server
• MySQL Server
• Ms-SQL Server
• PostgreSQL Server
• MongoDB
• SQLite
Examples for Data Analytics Software
• Microsoft Power BI
• Google Analytics
• Weka
• Apache Hadoop
• SAS Analytics
• Tableau
• IBM Watson Analytics
• RapidMiner
