Molecular weight and

Degree of Polymerization

1
The concept
• In low mol wt compounds, each molecule is identical and possesses same mol wt.
It is a sort of its identity.
• In case of polymers, there are several species present simultaneously.
• These species are formed during synthesis reactions according to statistical
probability depending on the constraints of thermodynamics and kinetics of the
reactions involved.
• Different chain lengths of the repeat unit exist, each one obviously having a
different mol wt.
• Therefore, a polymer has only average mol wt, and there are several types of
averages.
• Many properties of polymers depend on avg mol wt and distribution of mol wts.

Assignment
1. Consider three hypothetical monodisperse polymers, with M = 10,000,
M = 100,000, and M = 1,000,000.
For each, calculate, (weight average) and (number average)after adding the
following to 100 parts by weight of the polymer with M = 100,000:
a) 20 parts by weight of the polymer with M = 10,000.
b) 20 parts by weight of the polymer with M = 1,000,000
Calculate and after adding the following to 100 parts by number (of molecules) of
the polymer with M = 100,000:
c) 20 parts by number of the polymer with M = 10,000
d) 20 parts by number of the polymer with M = 1,000,000
