Community Language Learning

This document discusses Community Language Learning (CLL), an approach that emerged in the 1980s to promote language learning through real-life interactions. CLL is based on developing intimacy within a learning community through five stages of interaction between learners and teachers. It aims to increase accuracy, fluency, and motivation. Advantages include learner autonomy and benefits for lower levels. Challenges include initial discomfort and the need for teacher guidance. Overall, CLL provides a humanistic way for students to actively engage in tasks using the target language.

Philosophy Behind CLL
CLL is based on interaction between
learners and between learners and
1 The learner explains what they want to say
knowers. The goal is to strengthen social
ties in order to establish a community. This 2 He tries to become self-assertive without success
is defined as intimacy in CLL lingo. The
interaction between learners and knowers 3 The learner becomes resentful of their dependency
goes through five stages.
4 The learner becomes tolerant of their dependency

5 The learner becomes independent

Pros
Learners appreciate the autonomy CLL offers them and
thrive on analysing their own conversations.
CLL works especially well with lower levels who are
struggling to produce spoken English.
The class often becomes a real community, not just when
using CLL but all of the time. Students become much more
aware of their peers, their strengths and weaknesses and
want to work as a team.
Cons
In the beginning some learners find it difficult to
speak on tape while others might find that the
conversation lacks spontaneity.
We as teachers can find it strange to give our
students so much freedom and tend to
intervene too much.
CONCLUSION

CLL is a useful method for those who want to

motivate students from a more humanistic
perspective. With this approach, students are
actively learning and engaged in various real-
world task. Despite the problems, this approach
is yet one other way of teaching a target
language.
