The document discusses mass, weight, density, and their relationships. Mass is a measure of the amount of matter and does not change, while weight is the gravitational force on an object and varies by location. Density is defined as mass per unit volume. Weight is directly proportional to mass and the gravitational field strength determines an object's weight.

Mass ,Weight and Density
Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in a body. It is
constant everywhere. The SI unit of mass is kilogram(Kg).It is
dependent on the number and composition of atoms making up
the body. Mass is a scalar quantity which has magnitude only
but no direction.
Instruments for measuring Mass and Weight
Weight
Gravitational Field: The region surrounding the earth where
the gravity is experienced. It is strongest on the surface of
earth and gets weaker further away.
.Gravitational field strength is defined as the gravitational force
acting per unit mass on an object. On Earth it is about
10N/Kg. A 1kg object will experience a 10N gravitational force
due to Earth’s gravitational pull (gravity).
.Weight is due to the pull of gravity on an object that has mass.
The SI unit of weight is Newton. Its direction is downward
towards the centre of earth.

Relation between Mass and Weight
Since weight is a gravitational force, it is directly proportional to
the mass of the body. The acceleration due to free fall is 10m/s
which is the same as earth's gravitational field strength which
we will denote with g. So from Newton's second law we can find
the weight of an object easily. The equation is derived W=mg
Have you ever thought that why the
gravitational field strength on moon is weaker
than that on earth?.It is because the earth has
greater mass than earth. So greater the mass,
more is the gravity.
Inertia
Property of an object to show reluctance to change its state of
rest or uniform motion.
It is directly proportional to mass
It is the cause of Newton's First Law of Motion.
The coin will fall into glass due to its inertia.
 Another example is two people on swings, one heavy person
and one light one. The heavy one has a lot more inertia and will
therefore be much harder to get swinging and then much more
difficult to stop.
Density
Density of a substance is defined as mass per unit volume.
The SI unit of density is kilogram per cubic metre.
Density=Mass/ Volume.
The other unit is gram per cubic metre.
Substances that float on water have lower densities than water.
Substances that sink in water have higher densities than water.
Example is of ice which floats on water because the density of water
becomes smaller when it freezes.
Why does a steel ship float on water?
The reason is because its average density is less than the
density of water.
It occupies a large volume due to considerable amount of air.
Pure Substances have fixed densities whereas impure
substances’ density varies according to the quantity of impurity.
