Lp1-Chem 11 Gen-T1 - W1 - 1.1.1-1.1.3-P1

Salt is extracted in the UAE through evaporation. Historically, salt was extracted through evaporation of seawater. Table salt is sodium chloride, which is very different from its elements sodium (a soft, reactive metal) and chlorine (a toxic purple gas). Students drew a table comparing the properties of table salt, sodium, and chlorine.

Elements and Compounds-3 min
A Compound is a substance that can be broken down into simple stable substances by chemical means.
Each compound is made from the atoms of two or more elements that are chemically combined in a fixed
proportion.
Examples: Table salt (NaCl), table sugar (C12H22O11), marble (CaCO3)

Elements and Compounds-5 min
When elements combine, a compound is formed that often has properties different from the individual
elements.

Example:

Potassium iodide is a compound made from the two

elements: potassium, K, and iodine, I2.

• Potassium is a shiny, soft, silvery metal that reacts

violently with water.
• Iodine is a blue-black solid that turns to a purple gas at
room temperature.
• Potassium iodide is a white crystalline salt that is soluble in
water.
