3.1 Substation Type & Classification

The document discusses different types of substations including AC and DC substations. AC substations can be used for distribution, transmission, and interconnection purposes. They can be indoor, outdoor box type, outdoor open structure, outdoor low profile, or metal enclosed. DC substations use converters and inverters for transmission between stations or for network interconnection and submarine cable transmission. The document also provides examples of HVDC converter stations and details on the Ethiopia-Kenya HVDC interconnector project.

HIGH VOLTAGE GIS
 Available voltage class: 72,5 kV to 800 kV
 GIS is more compact in comparison with AIS substation so
it has a direct influence on:
 Land requirement
 Land cost
 Visual impact
 Land area required is 10 to 20% of that for an AIS
(Switchgear)
 Saving in overall land depends on specific voltage and
connections to transformers or overhead lines
 GIS offers high variety in design; allows indoor,
outdoor, underground and hybrid
 Suitable for urban or highly populated areas (indoor or
underground)

 Building of the substation near the points of
consumption; cost savings in distribution network
 Can replace a AIS substation in the event of growing
power demand or the need of higher transmission voltage
without additional space.

Converter Station (1068 km)

The project involves construction, between Kenya and

Ethiopia, of an electrical interconnector consisting of a
500 kilovolt high-voltage direct current transmission
line with a total length of 1,068 kilometers and
converters at substations. Wolaita-Sodo (Ethiopia) and
Suswa (Kenya), with a power transmission capacity of up
to 2,000 megawatts.
