Art Appreciation

This document discusses the imitation theory of art and beauty. It explains that imitationism, first proposed by Plato, holds that art imitates reality and the forms/essences of things. According to this view, there are three worlds: the world of being (reality), the world of becoming (physical appearances), and the world of art (imitations of appearances). The document also provides definitions of different art forms according to the imitation theory, stating that painting, sculpture, music, dance, literature, and drama all involve imitating aspects of reality through their given media.

Universe. The sound of the universe is the sound of music.
“There is geometry in the humming of the strings; there is music in
the spacing of the spheres.”

“The eyes are made for astronomy, the ears for the harmony, and
these are sister sciences.” Music is the imitation of cosmic sound.
