Introduction:

Management plays an important role in shaping

our lives. It enables to recognize the values, the
allocation of resources to attain the family
goals so as to enhance the standard of life.
Goals, values and standard are closely related
concepts. Value is the base and from values stem the
other two concepts- goals and standards.
Values are important to the individual but vague to
express in operational terms. The concepts of goal is
more specific. It signifies something definite
towards which one works. A standard is defined as
something used as basis.
What is STANDARD?
Standard is a scale of measurement of val-ues.
According to Nickell and Dorsey (1970), standards
are a set of measure of values stemming from our
value pat-terns, determining the amount and kind
of interest in something and the satis-faction we
receive. Standards serve as a measure or criterion
for measurement of objects or ways of doing
things.
Importance:

• It gives meaning to the lives, thoughts,

feelings and experiences of the members of
the family.
• It motivates the family to make decisions, to
achieve their desired goals.
• Setting standard makes life satisfying.
Classifications of Standard:

Conventional Standards

Conventional standards are those that are traditional and are

accepted by the society at large or in the social group. These
are established and relatively fired in any given society it
particularly point of time. Conventional standards are fixed
at a given time through liable to change when conditions
change.
Flexible standards
Non-conventional standards tend to be flexible. They are adopted
to suit a given situation. These are not widely accepted by the
community. But for convenience or due to resource restriction.
One might adopt flexible standards. Flexible standards allow
people to adjust procedures or conduct to existing situations.
Acceptance of flexible standards gives greater freedom of choice
and life is likely to be more relaxed, relations less strained, and
anxieties less apparent. People may have conventional /rigid
standards in some aspects of their lives and homes and flexible
standards in others because of value and the situations people
encounter.
Choosing either a conventional or a non conventional
standard is based on their convenience and availability of
resources. It is also dependent on its relation to
fundamental values and goals held, its effects on the
individual and group, the cost in the use of available
resources like money, time, energy the knowledge etc. and
the amount of satisfaction it brings
Values, goals, and standards because of their close
interrelationship also tend to act as a check and
balance system upon each other. In setting your
goals you are' indirectly examining, reinforcing,
and/or strengthening your values. At the same time
you are assessing the validity of the standards you
have established.
Values, goals, and standards are separate concepts.
Yet they are so closely linked that one cannot exist
without the other. Each in its own way has been a
source of input upon you. Separately and
collectively their input has enabled you to become a
unique person. Throughout your life their input will
motivate, guide, and direct your management.
Example:
Value- Ambition
Goals- To become successful someday.
Standard
Become a responsible student. (Going to school regularly,
doing assignments and other educational tasks)
Finish the chosen course.
Choosing the profession that you want.
• Become a responsible employee or leader.
Value – Health
Goals- To keep your body healthy and free from different
threats of illnesses.
Standard
Eat nutritious food.
Taking vitamins.
Exercise regularly.
Regular check-up.
• Good sleeping habit.
