Human and Personality Development / Knowing
One Self
Personality Development vs Personal Development

• PERSONAL – belongs to a particular person (e.g., Opinion, Experience).

• DEVELOPMENT - the act or process of growing.

• PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT

- A set of emotional qualities such humor, friendliness and energy; the person ways
of behaving that makes him a different or unique from other people.

- refers to the process by which the organized thought and behavior patterns that
make up a person's unique personality emerge over time.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
- is a process in which persons reflect upon themselves, understand who they are,
accept what they discover about themselves, and learn/unlearn new sets of
values, attitudes, behavior, and thinking skills to reach their fullest potential as
human beings.

- Covers activities that improve awareness and identity, develop talents and
potential, build human capital, and facilitate employability, enhance the quality of
life and contribute to the realization of dreams and aspirations.

- Personal Development takes places over the course of a person/s entire life.

- Personal Development is a lifelong process.


• HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
- Defined as an expansion of human capabilities, a
widening of choices, an enhancement of freedom , and a
fulfilment of human rights.
- is a branch of psychology with the goal of understanding
people — how they develop, grow, and change throughout
their lives.
– refers to the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial
development of humans throughout the life span.
Three aspects or domains of human development (Papalia and Feldman 2012)

1. Physical development - which covers the growth of the body


and the brain, motor and sensory skills, and even physical
health.

2. Cognitive development – which covers our capacity to learn,


to speak, to understand, to reason, and to create

3. Psychosocial development which includes our social


interactions with other people, our emotions, attitudes, self-
identity, personality, and values.
Human development is also influenced by:

• 1. Heredity the inborn traits passed on by the generations of


offspring’s from both sides of the biological parents families.

• 2. Environment - the world outside of ourselves and the


experiences that result from our contact and interaction with this
external world.

• 3. Maturation - is the natural progression of the brain and the


body that affects the cognitive, psychological and social.
Why is Personal Development very important?
• There are different views why personal development is very
important. In Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs will explain
why we need to give importance to the personal development.

• Direction: In the diagram below, create your own self care plan in writing
