Models of Communication

Communication is the process of sharing thoughts, ideas, and feelings between two or more people. Some key aspects of communication are that it is a process, interactive, and symbolic. Early models of communication include Aristotle's speech-audience model and Shannon-Weaver's model which introduced the concept of noise. More advanced models are Berlo's SMCR model with five elements and Schramm's model asserting communication requires overlap between the fields of experience of the speaker and listener. Dance's helical model portrayed communication as an evolving abstract process.

THREE TYPES OF SETTINGS

1.LEGAL SETTING
2.DELIBERATIVE SETTING
3.CEREMONIAL SETTING
LEGAL SETTING

The legal setting meant the courts where ordinary people

defended themselves ( there were no lawyers then).

DELIBERATIVE SETTING
Meant the political assemblies, the highest of which was the
Roman Senate.
CEREMONIAL SETTING

Meant the celebrations held when they won a war, when they
lost a leader or had a new one, and when they welcomed a
visiting leader from one another kingdom or country. Such
occasions called for speeches of welcome, poems of tribute or
of eulogies, and poems of lament.

SCHRAMM’S MODEL OF COMMUNICATION
SCHRAMM’S MODEL OF COMMUNICATION

WILBUR SCHRAMM considered as the “Father of Mass

Communication”

Schramm asserts that communication can take place if and

only if there is an overlap between the Field of Experience of
the Speaker and the Field of experience of the Listener.
WHAT IS THE FIELD OF EXPERIENCE

It is everything that makes a person unique- everything

he/ she has ever learned, watched, seen, heard, read and
studied.
Used to interpret the message and create a response.
Field o experience, can only happen when the two fields
have commonalities.

COMMUNICATION

communication becomes
wider
The process of communication evolves the very birth of an
individual and continues until the existing moment.
This model doesn’t have any features or element therefore it is
an abstract model.
It emphasized the difficulty of communication. Frank Dance
uses the form of HELIX to describe “communication process”.
He developed this theory based on a simple helix which gets
bigger and bigger as it moves grow.
