DIvIDES SIMPLE FRACTIONS AND MIXED

This document discusses dividing fractions and mixed numbers. It provides examples of dividing fractions step-by-step using the K-C-F method: Keep the first fraction, Change the operation to multiplication, Flip the second fraction. It also shows how to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions when dividing. Several practice problems are provided to divide fractions and simplify the answers.

Fractions and
Mixed Numbers
Reciprocals
If the product of two numbers is 1, then they are reciprocals or
multiplicative inverse of each other. To find the reciprocal of a
fraction, interchange the numerator and the denominator.

Example 𝟐 𝟓 𝟏
𝟓 𝟕
¿ ¿ ¿
𝟓 𝟐 𝟕 𝟓 𝟔
Example 1 Divide : ÷

Step 1 Get the reciprocal of

the divisor
÷ = ÷x
Step 2 Change the operation
from division to multiplication = 𝟏𝟓
x
Step 3 Multiply the numerator 𝟐𝟏
and denominator

Step 4 Simplify
= ÷
Example 2 Divide : ÷ K - C - F Method

K - Keep the first fraction

÷x
C - Change the operation
F - Flip the second fraction
= x = 1
Multiply the numerator and
denominator.
Convert improper fractions to mixed number
Example 3 Divide: ÷

Get the reciprocal of the divisor

÷ = 𝟓
Express the whole number
𝟏 x
as a fraction
Change the operation from division 𝟓
¿ x
to multiplication
𝟏
Multiply the numerator and
denominator
Simplify or write the product in lowest
= 𝟏𝟓
terms, if possible
Example 4 Divide : ÷2

Convert mixed number

16÷ 2 =
to improper fractions

𝑴𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒊𝒑𝒍𝒚 𝑨𝒅𝒅
Express the whole number
as a fraction
÷= ÷x
𝑹𝒆 c𝒊𝒑𝒓𝒐 c 𝒂𝒍 C𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏
Multiply the numerator and
denominator = =
Convert improper fractions to
mixed number
Example 5 Divide : 2 ÷1

Convert mixed number to 2÷ 2 = ÷ 𝟓 𝟏𝟏

¿ ÷
improper fractions 𝟐 𝟒
𝑲𝒆𝒆𝒑 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒇𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏
