Symbols and Circuits

The document discusses electrical circuits and their components, explaining the difference between cells and batteries, the symbols used in circuit diagrams, and the two types of circuits - series and parallel. Series circuits have components connected end to end forming a single path, while parallel circuits have multiple paths for current to flow. Examples and diagrams are provided to illustrate series and parallel circuits.

Title: Electrical circuits

Date: 04/05/21

Starter if you finish throwback Tuesday: What are the

images of? Why do we use them? – write this down in
your book
Objectives

• State the Difference between a cell and a battery

• Recognise and draw the circuit symbols

• Describe the function of each of the above components

• Draw circuit diagrams using the above symbols

Battery or cell?

A cell can store chemical

energy which can be
transferred into electrical
energy

A battery is many cells put

together in series
• Complete the match up activity
• Number or colour in to match one of each column (a
symbol, a name and definition)

• Symbols and definitions are already in the right places.

Match up the names
types of circuit
There are two types of electrical circuits;

SERIES CIRCUITS PARALLEL CIRCUITS

SERIES CIRCUITS
The components are connected end-to-end, one after the other.

They make a simple loop for the current to flow round.

If one bulb ‘blows’ it breaks the whole circuit and all the bulbs go out.
PARALLEL CIRCUITS
The components are connected side by side.

The current has a choice of routes (paths).

If one bulb ‘blows’ there would still be a complete circuit to the other bulb so
it stays lit.
Series circuit Parallel Circuit

Wires need to be drawn

with a ruler and must not
cross each other.
Questions

1. When you added more bulbs in your loop, what happened to the
brightness of the bulbs?
2. When you made the circuit with a switch in, how did you make the
bulb switch on?
3. What would happen to the brightness of a bulb if you added more
cells
4. Did the circuit with the ammeter work if the ammeter was switched
off? Why?
